LANDOVER -- Jay Gruden finally made the bold decision to name Kirk Cousins the Washington Redskins' starting quarterback over Robert Griffin III on Monday.

"When it's all said and done, after all the film we've gone through, after all the offseason activity, all the training camp footage, we feel like at this time, Kirk Cousins gives us the best chance to win and that's where we're going," Gruden said. "It's Kirk's team."

While RGIII is out with a concussion, it doesn't seem that made a difference to the coach's declaration. After multiple unsuccessful seasons plagued with injury and misfortune in DC, it has finally become time for Cousins to take the stage.

"Kirk has done an outstanding job," he said. "Robert has done some great things no question, we have total faith in all three of them. But moving forward, with all the things we've studied over the course of training camp and OTAs, we just feel like Kirk has earned the right to be the starting quarterback for 2015."

It certainly is never easy to decide between three quarterbacks in training camp, in this case those being Cousins, Griffin, and Colt McCoy. Due to the NFL's new-ish concussion policy, RGIII was unable to perform in Washington's Week 3 preseason game against the local Baltimore Ravens Saturday, leaving a battle between McCoy and Cousins.

"It's a good problem to have to have three quarterbacks that are competing and working their butts off and I feel like all three of them are capable quarterbacks," said Gruden. "Some people say when you have three, you don't have one and I disagree with that. We have three good quarterbacks that I feel good about. I just feel like Kirk right now gives us the best chance."

Cousins clearly outperformed his competitors, and now his appointment brings questions of Robert Griffin III's future as a whole. While rumors indicate that Griffin could be cut within the next few days as teams cut down to their 53-man rosters, Gruden shut down those talks briefly, declaring the team had not discussed releasing the former Baylor star.

"Yeah, I do [feel that RGIII will be on roster next week]," Gruden said. "I like Robert as a quarterback. No doubt about it. His future is with the Washington Redskins. There's been no discussions about letting him go or doing any of that stuff. We're going to plan on playing with these three quarterbacks."

On the topic of Cousins' success at the helm of the 'Skins' offense, it seems that the 27 year-old is set up for success.

He has some very capable receivers in Pierre Garçon, DeSean Jackson, and possibly Jordan Reed if the tight end is able to stay healthy in 2015, as well as a versatile runner in Alfred Morris.

Former Washington coach Mike Shanahan certainly confirmed that it was a good move by Gruden. Shanahan even said Cousins will be a Top Ten quarterback in the NFL as the Redskins' starter.

"Kirk Cousins is a franchise quarterback, he will be a top 10 quarterback in this league no doubt about it," Shanahan said. The coach's son Kyle Shanahan, now an offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons, said in June that Cousins has the potential "to be a great quarterback one day."

The Redskins have one more game before competition turns all too real and the NFL regular season begins. Cousins, McCoy, and Griffin must all prepare for any QB situation the season throws their way.
