Turnovers ended up costing the Buffalo Bills the win as they lost to the Detroit Lions 10-17 in Detroit Thursday night. The Lions finished the preseason 3-1 while the Bills ended at 2-2.

Matt Simms, son of former Giants Quarterback Phil Simms (current commentator for CBS) started and played the entire game. Despite throwing for more than 200 yards, the three turnovers involved Simms including two fumbled snaps. The other came when a defender brought Simms down and he lost the ball.

The fault didn't lie with just Simms for the lost however as the Bills did have numerous penalties. They finished with 31 total for the preseason, seventh highest in the NFL.

Buffalo's only touchdown came from the defense. Cornerback Ron Brooks picked up a loose ball and ran 81-yards for the score in the first. The defense did play strong overall despite the loss holding Detroit to only 46 rushing yards. The Bills defense didn't include any of the bills major players including Mario Williams and Marcell Dareus

On the other side the Lions' hero of the game was T.J. Jones who made a short reception he then turned into a 64-yard touchdown. Rookie Zach Zenner scored the Lions' other touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Zenner, the presumable fourth string running back finished with 10 carries for 21 yards.

For Buffalo, Bryce Brown got the start at running back and finished with 9 carries for 37 yards. Brown is in competition for the role as LeSean McCoy's backup along with Boobie Dixon after the release of Fred Jackson earlier this week.

Dan Carpenter, the usually automatic Bills kicker missed another field goal. It was the third field goal he missed during the preseason. The misses were from 40 yards or more and an extra point.

Simms finished with 22-38 with 223 yards. Kellen Moore was 16-22 with 150 yards and a touchdown. Simms is considered the fourth string quarterback behind newly named starter Tyrod Taylor, E.J. Manuel, and Matt Cassel. Rumors have been swirling Cassel may be released in favor of Manuel and Simms. It was also reported no matter how Simms performed, it would not impact the decision on Cassel.

Both Buffalo and Detroit sat most of the starters in preparation for the start of the regular season next week. This was the last chance for many of the backups to prove whether or not they deserved a roster spot which has to be cut down to 53 Saturday. The Bills host the Colts Sunday the 13th which will feature Tyrod Taylor against Andrew Luck, their first meeting since facing off in the Orange Bowl in 2011. The Lions play against San Diego in their home opener.
