Filling in for Marshawn Lynch is not the easiest job in the world. In addition to replacing one of the best active running backs in the known universe, Lynch’s replacement must also run with the physicality that the Seattle Seahawks’ fans and coaches have grown accustomed to witnessing on a weekly basis.

The Seahawks have never been able to find a deputy for Lynch. Backups that run with a similar physicality to ‘Beast Mode’ are hard to find.

Following Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, the search may be over.

Thomas Rawls, VAVEL NFL’s Week 5 Rookie of the Week, ran rampant against Cincinnati, totaling 169 rushing yards on only 23 carries. The undrafted rookie averaged 7.3 yards per carry and also scored. His longest run came on a physical, 69-yard breakaway that easily could have passed as one of Lynch’s long runs.

What’s even more impressive about the game is the amount of yards Rawls racked up. His 169 yards is more than many prominent running backs’ yardage totals on the season. Some of these players haven’t played in every game this season due to injury or suspension, but they’ve all played at least three games.

Rawls’ 169 rushing yards on Sunday is more than the following running backs’ rushing totals all season: DeMarco Murray, LeSean McCoy, C.J. Anderson, Lynch, Lamar Miller, LaGarrette Blount and Danny Woodhead.

The Seahawks weren’t able to come away with the victory, but Rawls cemented himself not only as Lynch’s backup, but possibly as his eventual successor when the time comes.

If ‘Beast Mode’ continues to miss time because of injury, Rawls should continue to start, with Fred Jackson contributing more in passing situations. Should Lynch stay on the sidelines and with the Hawks’ offensive line improving, don’t be surprised to see Rawls put up more big games like this one.
