The Seattle Seahawks announced that they have managed to reach a contract extension with general manager John Schneider.

The NFL side announced on Sunday night that the new deal will run throughout 2021, and Schneider is expected to be one of the highest paid GM’s in the league.

His contract was due to expire at the end of 2016, which would have been his sixth season in charge of the Seahawks.

GM extends stay in Seattle

Schneider was named general manager back in January 2010 and has doubled as Seattle’s executive vice president since 2013.

“Seahawks extend top GM John Schneider, key architect of our roster… Congrats!” Seahawks owner Paul Allen said on Twitter.

The GM started as a scout of the Green Bay Packers from 1993 to 1996 and returned to Green Bay six years later after spells with the Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle, and the Washington Redskins.

Schneider was the director of football operations in Green Bay before arriving in Seattle, where he has led them from strength to strength during his tenure.

Successful spell at the helm

The Seahawks have made the postseason on five of the six seasons Schneider has been in charge, winning the NFC West title three times, two Conference Championships, and winning the Super Bowl in 2014.

The following season Seattle made it to the Super Bowl, making it back-to-back appearances in the season finale, but lost to the New England Patriots in the dying embers of the game.

Pete Carroll arrived on the scene a week before Schneider was brought in, and the squad went under reconstruction under the pair.

After two seasons of losing more games than they won, the Seahawks have won at least 10 games in their last four seasons, which has seen the franchise succeed.

Notable players that have been drafted in under Schneider are Pro Bowl stars Russell Wilson, Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas and Bobby Wagner.
