It was a rough loss for the Tampa Bay Lightning, who amassed 38 shots and outplayed the Ottawa Senators for the majority of the game tonight. Despite the adversity, however, the Senators will leave Tampa Bay with their first win of the season.

First period

As the first period began, it was revealed who the alternate captains for the Lightning would be: Brendan Morrow and Valterri Filppula. The Lightning plan to switch the "A"s around for the rest of October until they determine who deserves them the most. The first 20 minutes began and early on Ottawa got their first scoring chance as the puck took a weird bounce off the boards and out in front of Ben Bishop who was caught off guard and out of position. Luckily for him, Ottawa forward David Legwand failed to get a shot away as the puck bounced over his stick. The Senators got the first powerplay but the Bolts struck first as Victor Hedman fired a laser past Robin Lehner to give Tampa a 1-0 lead. The Sens got another powerplay but once again failed to score. JT Brown almost gave Tampa a 2-0 lead as Erik Karlsson could not knock him down at the side of the net but he failed to get the puck in and the period ended with Tampa Bay still leading 1-0.

Second period

Less than five minutes into the second frame, David Legwand went to the box for Ottawa and Alex Killorn almost converged on the ensuing powerplay for the Lightning but just missed the pass he needed to score. Only a few moments later Killorn almost scored again as he sent puck right into the goal crease and Lightning captain Steven Stamkos also had a few whacks at the puck before Lehner covered it. Tampa Bay dominated zone time in the period largely thanks to the Nikita Kucherov-Vladislav Namestnikov-JT Brown line (who also excelled in their play all night long). Stamkos gets a perfect shot off in the slot with less than a minute left in the period but Lehner stops that as well.

Third Period

Tampa Bay went on the powerplay early in the third period but soon after it ended the Senators tied it thanks to Erik Karlsson and less than two minutes later Mark Stone really burst the bubble in the crowd by giving Ottawa a 2-1 lead. A quick answer is what the Bolts needed and that is what happened only moments later. Brian Boyle set up Brett Connolly with a beautiful pass that led to a beautiful goal. Shortly after a rush led by Steven Stamkos almost gave Tampa Bay a lead but nothing came of it and the game would need extra time.

Overtime

With nearly identical scoring chances where one player would break away and then the same would happen for the other team, things got wild. The Senators almost ended it as Ben Bishop was down but Steven Stamkos blocked the net and kept Tampa alive.

Shootout

Round 1 of the SO saw each team score, first Kyle Turris for Ottawa and then Nikita Kucherov for Tampa. The second round saw no goals but Mika Zibanejad scored to give Ottawa the lead in the third round. Steven Stamkos, however, would not respond as he lost the puck while stick-handling giving Ottawa the 3-2 win.

Ottawa is now 1-1-0 and Tampa Bay is 1-0-1. Tampa Bay will stay home to face Montreal on Monday night while the Senators will head to Florida. Robin Lehner earned the first star, Ben Bishop the second, and Erik Karlsson the third.
