It’s expensive to go to any hockey game nowadays and even more so in the playoffs. But has the idea of just going to see a playoff game lessened due to the massive cost of attending one? To attend Game 1 or 2 in the Western Conference Final between the Anaheim Ducks and Chicago Blackhawks, the average fan would have to pay just a few dollars shy of $300. But if you live in Chicago, expect to pay more around $450. That may seem like a huge amount (it is) but before anybody gets crazy over that, they should look up what it costs to see the New York Rangers play the Tampa Bay Lightning in Games 1 and 2 of the Eastern Conference Final. If you’re planning to go to one in Tampa Bay, it could cost between five and six hundred dollars to attend. What’s it cost to see a game in Madison Square Garden in New York? According to Forbes, tickets are expected to cost, on average, just over $770. Forbes states that that price is 158% higher than it would cost to attend a game in Anaheim. What could you as a fan do with that money? Well, it’s quite the list.

For the cost of an average ticket at Madison Square Garden, you could purchase the following:

1. A primary logo shirt from the NHL’s shop for every single team in the National Hockey League. That’s one shirt for all 30 teams. One shirt costs $21.95 for a grand total of $658.50

2. Four Steven Stamkos jerseys from the NHL’s shop. Each jersey costs $169.95 a piece and adds up to $679.80

3. 25 New York Rangers Official Playoff hats from the NHL’s shop. Each one would cost $29.95 and turns out to be $748.75

4. You could get a name and number shirt for 16 players (combined from both the Rangers and Lightning) and still be over $300 away at $447.20 with each shirt at a price of $27.95

5. Finally, you could buy 22 inflatable Stanley Cups. The best part of that being, your team didn’t even have to make the playoffs to get one (ask Dallas, LA, or New jersey fans). They each sell for $34.95 and you can even get one that has the NHL logo instead of your team’s logo. 22 of them would cost $768.90.

The list can go on and on. The price is crazy, even for regular season games. Unless you went to Panthers games in the 2013-14 season where they could be bought for as little as $5 at one point, odds are you won’t find a cheap price anytime soon. It’s an amazing thing to see hockey in person and experience the atmosphere of the game, fans and events happening around you but should it put such a dent in the average fan’s wallet. In 2013, ESPN reported that the average ticket price league wide rose 5.7% from the year before. While we talked about ticket prices for a Conference Final game in Chicago, it’s key to remember they’re not the only ones who have prices that are high. Tip IQ reports a rise in prices for 22 of the NHL’s 30 have raised their prices since the start of the 2012 season. The New York Islanders can’t be left out of this conversation, their prices rose a whopping 102.91% from the 2013 shortened season to the 2013-14 season, going from just over $74 to $150 (likely due to the team’s surprising success in the prior year). The Toronto Maple Leafs had the highest prices to start the season at $446.25 while the Carolina Hurricanes had the lowest at $62.08.

But regardless of how easy it is to attend a game in Carolina, ticket prices have still become extremely high in recent years and this cost may prevent certain fans, including this author, from attending as many games as they’d like to.
