Behind the sensational 26-save shutout from goaltender Jake Allen, the St. Louis Blues (11-3-1) were able to defeat the New Jersey Devils (8-6-1) 2-0 Tuesday night at The Rock.

The Devils had came into tonight's game having won eight of eleven (8-2-1) and were vying for their third-straight home victory.

New Jersey came out firing on all cylinders and brought it to the Blues right from the drop of the puck. Through the first period New Jersey had dominated, leading 11-6 in the shot column but was unable to put a puck past Allen.

From that moment on, it was all St. Louis.

In their return to New Jersey, the former Devils teamed up when Martin Havlat scored off the assist from Scott Gomez, giving the Blues the 1-0 lead early in the second period.

Havlat had signed a one-year deal with the Blues on November 6 and was playing in his first game of the season - ironically enough against the Devils.

Magnus Paajarvi would also score for the Blues, who have now won three straight games.

Cory Schneider played great, making 26 saves in the losing effort.

After a dominate first period, the Devils were unable to withstand the onslaught from the Blues. New Jersey was outshot 14-4 in the second period and seemed to lose control of the game, allowing all the momentum to swing in favor of the Blues.

"This was just a game that as the game wore on, we just got outplayed," Devils head coach John Hynes said. "We just didn't play to the level we needed to play to in the last 40 minutes of the game and therefore, we didn't get a chance to win."

Devils defenseman Damon Severson appeared to breakup Allen's shutout, but after review was disallowed because time had expired before the puck crossed the line.

The 25-year-old Allen, who was coming off a 45-save shutout in his last game against Nashville, has now allowed two-or-fewer goals in seven straight games (6-1) and is playing elite-level hockey. In ten games this season, Allen has posted a 7-3-0 record with .950 save percentage, 1.53 goals against average, and three shutouts.

As a result of his stellar play, Allen has no question stolen the starting job from teammate Brian Elliott.

Overall, it was a tale of two halves for the Devils. New Jersey came out aggressive against the Blues early on, but just couldn't muster a goal and you had a feeling it was going to be "one of those nights." After the first, New Jersey appeared to shut it down, allowing the Blues to control the tempo for the rest of the game.

"It just wasn't good enough from us. They came out with a push and we've got to find a way to raise our game and match them," Adam Henrique said.

The Devils will look to rebound Thursday night as they travel to the United Center to play the Chicago Blackhawks, a team the Devils defeated 4-2 less than a week ago.
