Ten teams took to the ice on Monday night with all of them on the east coast. Here's a quick breakdown of what happened in the NHL tonight:

Tampa Bay Lightning 2 - Columbus Blue Jackets 1 - Final

After a scoreless first period between the two clubs and a fight between Ryan Callahan and Scott Hartnell, the two teams scored once each in the second. Jonathan Marchessault scored for Tampa in his return to the place where he played his first NHL game in Columbus. The Lightning went up 1-0, but Brandon Dubinsky tied it shortly after, thanks to a defensive blunder by Tampa Bay which left Dubinsky and teammate Matt Calvert open down low. Brian Boyle got a short-handed goal in the third period for the game winner and Ben Bishop stood tall in goal for Tampa Bay. The Lightning picked up the win in their first game of a three game road trip.

Washington Capitals 4 - Pittsburgh Penguins 1 - Final

It was Pittsburgh's first game following the firing of head coach Mike Johnston. They did not pick up the win though as Braden Holtby made 44 saves to lead Washington to victory. Nicklas Backstrom struck first for Washington, followed by John Carlson less than four minutes afterwards to give the Capitals a 2-0 lead. Evgeni Malkin continued to sizzle with his 14th goal later on in the first period. The score sheet would remain blank in the second and into the third, until T.J. Oshie struck about nine minutes into the period to regain the two goal lead for the Caps. He was assisted by Backstrom on that goal as well as Oshie's second goal of the period, an empty netter with under a minute to go. The Capitals now have ten points in their last eleven games and have a three point lead over the New York Islanders in their division.

Edmonton Oilers 3 - Boston Bruins 2 - Final/OT

The Oilers have now won six straight games for the first time since the 2011-12 season. This kind of win is exactly the kind they needed to kick off their road trip and to help goaltender Cam Talbot regain confidence. Talbot turned aside 47 shots from Boston and despite giving up one weak goal, he helped the Oilers get their win. Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins gave Edmonton a 2-0 lead in the first period. Matt Belesky closed the gap to one with a goal in the second for Boston and Brad Marchand sniped one home in the third period to tie the game. But less than a minute into overtime, Andrej Sekera tracked down the rebound from his first shot and buried it for the game winner. It was also a big win for Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli, who was returning to Boston for the first time since being fired from the general manager position after nine seasons with the Bruins. He helped them reach the Stanley Cup in 2011 (which they won) and 2013. Edmonton's last win in Boston came in 1996.

Ottawa Senators 5 - Los Angeles Kings 3 - Final

The Kings took their five game winning streak into Ottawa against Craig Anderson's Senators. Anderson was starting his 15th straight game. Jamie McBain gave the Kings a 1-0 lead in the first, but that was LA's only lead of the night. In the second period, Mike Hoffman sniped one home, followed a few minutes later by a Kyle Turris goal. Shortly thereafter, Erik Karlsson would bang one home and just ike that, the Senators were up 3-1. Later on in the period, Hoffman struck again for his 17th of the season and Ottawa had a 4-1 lead over the Kings. Before the period ended, the Kings shot one into the Senators' end and when Anderson went out to stop the puck behind the net, it hit the boards and bounced right into the reach of Tyler Toffoli. He would put it into the empty net. Halfway into the third, Jake Muzzin made it a one goal game, but Mika Zibanejad would restore the two goal lead for Ottawa just over two minutes later. Zibanejad and Hoffman combined for three goals and six points on the night.

Buffalo Sabres 2 - Detroit Red Wings 1 - Final

The Red Wings had a point in every game since November 14th, a span of 13 games coming into tonight's game with the Sabres. Their 8-0-5 streak has seen them climb to second in the Atlantic Division,  behind Montreal. The game was quiet until the second period when Brad Richards got his second goal of the season from Pavel Datsyuk and Darren Helm. It looked as though Detroit would carry this lead and turn it into a win, until Ryan O'Reilly got one late in the third to tie it up. Then, a minute and one second later, Johan Larsson scored and made it 2-1 Buffalo. Detroit pushed hard in the dying minute thanks to a questionable icing by the Sabres and Gustav Nyquist had a yawning cage to put the puck into for the tie. However, Chad Johnson made an incredible save to seal a Sabres win.
