Do not adjust your computer/phone/tablet screens. You read that correctly. The Seattle Reign has traded away Sydney Leroux to the Western New York Flash. The trade was made early Monday evening. The Reign sent Leroux and defender Amanda Frisbie to the Flash. In return, the Reign received midfielder Amber Brooks, WNY's 2016 first-round draft pick and the rights to Abby Wambach.

For those of you out of the loop, Wambach will not be playing in the NWSL this year as she is solely focusing on the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada this coming summer. The Flash and their fans were left wondering where their goal scoring would come from. Well, they got their answer in Leroux.

“As everyone knows, Sydney Leroux is a top goalscorer who has had both a fantastic club and international career so far,” said Flash general manager and head coach Aaran Lines. “I’m excited about the opportunity that she presents for us and the offensive threat that she adds to our attack.”

Leroux will be entering her third season in the NWSL. This will be the third club she has played before since 2013 having been acquired from the Boston Breakers by the Reign after the 2013 NWSL offseason in exchange for Kristie Mewis, Michele Betos and the Reigns first two picks in the 2015 draft. She has appeared in 41 regular season games and has scored 16 goals in her first two years in the league. She was also part of a Reign team that went 16-2-6 (win-loss-tie) in 2014 on their way to the NWSL shield.

The Reign will be receiving the rights to a player that has no intention of playing during the 2015 NWSL season. There is also no guarantee that she will play for the club in 2016, but Laura Harvey was willing to take that chance for an aging forward.

“Abby is a fantastic player who has proven over the years she is one of the best forwards in the world,” Reign coach Laura Harvey said in a statement released by the team. “We understand and support her decision to focus on the World Cup this season. The contribution she is capable of making is obvious, so we will welcome her to our club at whatever point she is ready to rejoin the league.”

“We want to thank both Sydney and Amanda for all they contributed to the club last year,” Harvey said. “Both are quality – as players and individuals – who have great careers ahead.”

Frisbee was the number 7 overall pick in the 2014 NWSL draft, but missed her rookie year due to injury. She attended the University of Portland where she was a standout all four years that she played for the Pilots. During her collegiate career, she scored 31 goals to go along with 12 assists in 71 career games.

“Amanda is a young, versatile player who fits the bill here in Western New York,” Lines said. “She had a stellar career in Portland and was, obviously, injured last season but we love that she is young and will want to play a contributing role with our club.”

It’s a bold move by Harvey and the Reign and only time will tell if it was a good move.
