With Hope Solo out with a knee injury that she suffered during the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup and Haley Kopmeyer sustaining a foot injury against the Portland Thorns on July 26th, the Seattle Reign have signed another goalkeeper. Abigail Steele joined the team last week to help add depth to the Reign.

Steele, 21, is a 2014 graduate from the University of Oregon. She played all four seasons with the Ducks and during finished her career first in goals allowed average (1.4) and shutouts (17). She finished with 21 wins and 307 saves which is good enough for third all-time in Oregon History. Her senior season she allowed 18 goals and was earned Pac-12 honorable mention selection as well.

Per NWSL rules, if a team has less than two available goalkeepers, they will be able to add a goalkeeper to its roster until its goalkeeper is back to full participation. This can be done as long as it is done within the salary cap.

The club also added Caroline Stanley, 22, after learning that Solo will be a game to game decision until she is fully healthy and can return to the appropriate fitness level. Stanley has been with the team since Solo left for international duty back in May.

"We are in a position where Haley and Hope are unavailable to play so we've utilized the goalkeeper replacement rule in the league and signed Abigail," head coach and general manager Laura Harvey said. "We had our eye on Abigail at the draft earlier this year. Thankfully we are in a position where we can get her signed."

It will be interesting to see how these two young goalkeepers play while Kopmeyer and Solo recover from their respective injuries. Solo has played only three games this season and Kopmeyer has played well in her place. In ten games, the Reign went 7-1-3 (win-loss-tie). The way the Reign have been playing lately, besides their 3-0 defeat a few weeks ago, they could probably put any goalkeeper back there and still somehow figure out a way to win.

They have turned their season around and have found themselves at the top of the NWSL table. They are off this week before they take on the Houston Dash at home on August 12th at Memorial Stadium.
