Tonight the Netherlands and the US met at Georgia Dome in Atlanta, according to US Soccer this was the third match between the two countries in the 21st century.

The USWNT has just said goodbye to Heather O'Reilly  in their last match while Arjan van der Laan, head coach of the Netherlands, has only been coaching the team for about a year. With the former football player as the head coach for the Netherlands, it was his first time to really be able to gather the team's tactics and strengths to bring the team in unity for a win.

Early goal from Netherlands

Within the first two minutes of the game, forward Shanice van den Sanden scored on US goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher. The Netherlands came out strong taking the lead at the beginning of the first half. As the game progressed, midfielder Tobin Heath dribbled up the right side of the field and made a nice cross to the center of the eighteen where US captain Carli Lloyd was there to finish the play with a perfect shot to the back of the net. Her 94th international goal allowed the game to tie up 1-1 before the second half.

Netherlands allows the US takes the lead after scoring their own goal

As both teams were fighting to defeat the score of a tie, the game began progressing. For the Netherlands it progressed a tad too much as they scored their own goal. As midfielder Christen Press crossed the ball from the left side of the field, dutch player  Mandy van den Berg attempted to clear the ball. In doing so, it hit her body allowing for the US to take the lead 2-1.

Shortly after in the 62' forward Vivianne Miedema is given a yellow card for too much shoving of US players. Miedema at age 20 has already had 37 caps with the Netherlands. Within those games she already has 26 goals underneath her belt. As the play started with a throw in, Megan Rapinoe made a strong cross to the goal where the ball bounced off of Crystal Dunn with a nice header from Allie Long in the 76'.

The US took a 3-1 victory against the Netherlands, who took second place in the Olympics last month. As the US had more possession of the ball they also had 12 shots with six of them being on goal. The Dutch team had a total of 10 shots with five of them on goal.

Tonight's game as an assessment for both teams

Even though the Netherlands got in an early goal and scored on themselves, the US managed to come back and put another one - of their own goals - in.

The Netherlands are the hosts of the European's Women's Championship, or Euro 2017, which is to take place next summer along with 15 other teams that have qualified.

2006 was the first game between the two countries along with the most recent match that took place in 2013. This game has been the first since 2013 and was a successful assessment for both teams to fine tune their plays and make any changes that didn't work out as well as they hoped.
