Entering the 2015 season, Carlos Munoz has 21-career Verizon IndyCar Series starts under his belt - that’s two less than the number that represents his age. With only one full season of experience in an IndyCar, 2015 could be break-through sort of year for the Colombian, even a small one. If he can find himself at the front in some races in 2015, using what experience behind the wheel of an IndyCar that he has, we may see some great finishes out of Munoz this year. 2014, his only full season, was a major learning experience for him, and he has some rather impressive results to show for it. Can he better his current resume, maybe adding a pole position or a win to it this year? He’s yet to collect one of either, but 2015 may see that change.

Briefly studying the graph of Carlos’ finishes throughout last season, you can deduce that consistency was not there in his first full season in an IndyCar. His average start and finish through last season are 10.5 and 12.6, respectively. His only other year in IndyCar was 2013, where he drove in three total races, one of which being the 500, where he earned his career best start and finish positions (2nd for both). Pushing his finishes out of mind for a second, Munoz was in great position in the points standings from really the fifth race of the year on. Ironically, that fifth race was the Indianapolis 500, a race where double points were on offer, where he finished with a phenomenal drive in fourth, earning 99 points to his name. These 99 points took the name Carlos Munoz from 19th to sixth in the points standings, where he would stay until the second race in Houston, where he earned only eight points due to an early-ended race with contact. Overall, the 18 races he drove in last year, 14 of which were finished start to finish, consisted of 2,096 laps of a fantastic learning experience, as he enters his third year in the Verizon IndyCar Series and his second full season.

As is common with all young drivers in IndyCar, using their past finishes and past performances as a gauge for their future success simply do not work. With 2014 being the “learning experience” that was for Carlos Munoz, 2015 will bring forth great finishes, the way track position works out and with the talent that the Colombian has already shown. Given that he finished eighth in the points standings last year after hovering between sixth and seventh throughout the good majority of the schedule, Carlos Munoz as a contender for a spot in the championship from third to eighth seems extremely possible; the top drivers in the series may be just a bit out of reach for 23-year-old Munoz, but that’s not to say he won’t be finishing better than them in a handful of races in 2015.
