It all comes down to the sponsors.

Swiss Miss, Simona De Silvestro, is in talks to return to IndyCar. Racing in the series from 2010 to 2013, De Silvestro left to secure an F1 seat in 2014. As an “affiliated driver.” De Silvestro was to complete a year-long training program for the F1 series, but those plans fell apart due to contractual issues. Now the Iron Maiden is back and looking for a ride.

Recent rumor suggested De Silvestro could partner with James Hinchcliffe at SPM Racing. Although that seat has recently been filled by James Jakes, a few open cars remain, most notably with Andretti Autosports, in a fourth and fifth car for that team. If De Silvestro can line up the sponsorship, she could potentially beat out even Justin Wilson for a seat - which Stefan Wilson seems to be expecting, as per his Twitter today.

De Silvestro has always had potential to be an amazing IndyCar driver. In her first full season year, De Silvestro earned the Indy 500 Rookie of the Year award, finishing 14th in that race in 2010. She finished 10 of 17 starts that year, earning two top-ten finishes and coming close for overall Rookie of the Year.

Plagued with injuries, customs issues, and Lotus engines, De Silvestro hasn’t had it easy. With back to back burn injuries in 2010 and 2011, De Silvestro missed the Sonoma race in 2011 - a customs officer refused to allow the frequent traveler into the United States, not believing De Silvestro could be a professional racer.

2012 was a disaster of a year, with black flags for speed issues throughout the year due to the Lotus engine. In 2013, partnered with Tony Kanaan at KV Racing, De Silvestro joined the list of women who’d made a podium finish in the IndyCar Series, coming in second at the Grand Prix of Houston.

Given a good team, De Silvestro could be a force to be reckoned with. IndyCar fans will be thrilled her F1 ventures did not work out, as the racing series needs a strong female leader. In a full-time fourth Andretti car, or a part-time fifth car, De Silvestro could stand tall on a podium once again.
