Testing at Barber Motorsports Park just before the season got underway (March 16-17) saw the initial testing of a prototype version of on-board LED position lights; the LED panel was fitted to the KV Racing Technologies car of Stefano Coletti for the test. This technology has been confirmed - and we could see it for the very first time as early as May 24 at the 99th Running of the Indianapolis 500.

The LED panels will be mounted on both sides of the car and will indicate the current position held by the car during each session or race. The equipment was received last week after the manufacturer received feedback from the series after the March try-out.

There is a chance that the debut of these LED position lights will take place at the next race, the Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis, but it is most likely that they will see their competition debut at the 99th Running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 24.

"While our plan wasn't to fit it for the road course, if we can get everything in place for the Grand Prix, we'll use them," said Derrick Walker, IndyCar president of competition. "The Indy 500 is the main plan, and we're on schedule."

The next race for the Verizon IndyCar Series is the second annual Grand Prix of Indianapolis this weekend at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The green flag will fly at about 3:30 pm ET.
