Jan Vertonghen's neat finish in the second half gave Belgium a 1-0 win over a stubborn South Korea side in the final group match of the World Cup.

Playing with 10 men for the second half after Steven Defour was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Kim Shin-wook just before half time, Belgium managed to sneak past their opponents when substitute Divock Origi's shot was parried by Kim Seung-gyu straight into the path of Vertonghen, who made no mistake from six yards out.

South Korea had some good chances with Son Heung-Min going close on multiple occasions, but Thibaut Courtois dealt with everything that came his way as Belgium maintained their 100% record at the World Cup so far.

Knowing only a win would take them through to the last 16, South Korea started as the brighter side and had a good chance through Kim Young-gwon but he lashed the ball high and wide.

Anthony Vanden Borre was unlucky to be denied a penalty when he tumbled under the challenge of Young-gwon, whilst just a few minutes later Kevin Mirallas put the ball in the back of the South Korea net but he was correctly rules offside.

Dries Mertens wasted the best chance of the half after 25 minutes when he blazed over from 10 yards out with the goal gaping, but South Korea were unlucky not to take the lead when a corner caused chaos in the Belgium area and was cleared off the line.

Just before half time, the ninth red card of the tournament was brandished when Defour jumped in on Shin-wook with his studs up, leaving referee Benjamin Williams no choice but to dismiss the midfielder.

Origi entered the game just after half time, his third consecutive substitute appearance of the tournament, and changed the game when he provided a rare attacking threat by going close with 15 minutes left.

He helped break the deadlock though, when Seung-gyu could only push his long shot into Vertonghen, who beat the offside trap to slot home with 13 minutes to go.

South Korea, who needed two goals at this point, attempted to get back into the game but couldn't muster any real chances and the game fizzled out without any real fight from the Asian side.

Belgium will now face USA in the second round on Tuesday, whilst South Korea finish bottom of Group H, having gained just a single point in their three games.
