Despite dominating possession and having the better of the chances through out the game, Chicago dropped points at home once again, as Sebastian Le Toux converted a penalty late on.
Chicago looked the stronger side in the opening minutes as Philadelphia struggled creatively, shut down by central midfield duo Alex and Jeff Larentowitcz. However it would be Philadelphia who had the first legitimate chance 13mins in when a header by Connor Casey was cleared away by Harry Shipp, who upon replay revealed to have used his arm, however no call was given. From there on it was mostly Chicago, with a cagey and some what physical first half producing two yellow cards. 17 mins in tragedy almost struck as Sheanon Williams almost put the ball into his own net with a headed clearance, with Lovel Palmer lurking not far behind. Despite the better of the chances including a foreshadowing corner from Shipp, with Larentowitcz, heading it over, unmarked in the 37th the first half ended 0-0.
Philadelphia struggled for possession and lacked creativity in the final third without star man Christian Maidana who was out with a hamstring injury.
In a much more open 2nd half Chicago came out of the gates swinging with Harry Shipp's cross in the 46th finding the arms of Macmath. Another wave of Chicago's attack in the 49th was foiled by the hand by Macmath as a desperate act goalkeeping prevented Quincy Amirikwa from opening the scoring for Chicago. Philadelphia shot back soon after a shoddy goalkeeping from Johnson off a union long thrown in threatened to give Philadelphia the lead in the 51st but Johnson recover from his mistake to prevent a goal.
Chicago would however get their goal as Shipp's corner again found the head of Larentowitcz, who headed home, completely unmarked to put Chicago 1-0 up in the 60th. Following the goal, Union striker Andrew Wenger came on for winger Danny Cruz in the 60th. Chicago's nerves would be tested however as goalkeeper Sean Johnson came out, Manuel Neuer style to slide the ball away from an onrushing Connor Casey in the 68th. Following the clearance Philadelphia made a substitution as Fred came on for Amobi Okugo in the 69th.
Chances continued to come for Philadelphia as captain Maurice Edu missed from point blank range in the 70th. Following another solid performance from the rookie, Grant Ward came on for Harry Shipp in the 74th. A collision between Johnson and Soumare left the Chicago's net empty but Le Toux couldn't navigate his shot through traffic in the box. Then in the 78th Fondy came in for Quincy Amirikwa, followed by Philadelphia Union debutant Brian Brown coming on for Ray Gaddis, as Philadelphia searched for an equalizer. Brown made an immediate impact, displaying his pace by running down the left wing, only to concede a costless kick for a foul on Lovel Palmer.
However Philadelphia would get their equalizer as a Penalty for the Union was awarded for a handball by Gonzalo Segares. Le Toux converted the kick to break Chicago hearts and steal a point on the road for Philadelphia.
