6:22 PM EST: It appears as though Christian Maidana will not be available tonight as he is still out with a left hamstring injury which he picked up in the early minutes of Philadelphia game versus the New York Red Bulls.

6:18 PM EST: No matter the opposition or the result, these games still provide an opportunity for MLS players to test themselves against top opposition, for managers to experiment with personnel and tactically in a relatively low pressure situation, and for MLS fans alike to pat ourselves on the back if won (even if the win is regarded as illegitimate by some.)

6:15 PM EST: While Curtin's position seems clear regarding his intentions with the squad for this game, a great debate still remains over what to do regularly for these mid season friendlies with European opposition. Some cite the importance of these friendlies as a benchmark of where MLS stands, relative to other leagues b but a double edged sword/ lack of clarity due to the nature of the games (preseason Europeans - mid season MLS, friendly match remains. The outcome these matches can often be a double edged sword because, if a team from MLS loses, especially in embarrassing fashion such as Manchester United's drubbing of the Los Angeles Galaxy earlier this week it's regarded as a set back for Major League Soccer and an opportunity for criticism that our league hasn't grown far enough yet. However, if a team from MLS wins they often receive the criticism that the win was illegitimate because the league is in full swing while their opposition fielded an unfit “B Team” in preseason, not to mention the possibility of injury to key players halfway through the season.

6:10 PM EST: Key match-ups to look for: Yannick Bolasie (CPAL) vs. Sheanon Williams (PHI), Chamakh vs. Edu, and Mile Jedinak vs. Maidana (If fit.) Also look out for Palace's top scorer last season Dwight Gayle and Philadelphia's in form Sebastian Le Toux.

6:03 PM EST: Philadelphia have faced off against European opposition nine times, having most recently lost to Palace manager Tony Pulis' former side, Stoke City 2-0 in 2013, coached by Mark Hughes at the time. Their all time record versus European opposition is 4-4-1. Despite an explosive offense as of late Philadelphia's defense as struggled for consistency, conceding many a late goal this season. Meanwhile the story of opposition Crystal Palace is one of stark contrast. Palace had the sixth best defense in the Premier League last season, even conceding fewer goals than runners up Liverpool (48 vs. 50.) However, their attack was the third worst in the Premier League, (33 goals) only besting relegated duo Norwich City and Cardiff City. (32 and 28 goals.) Expect Philadelphia to have a difficult time breaking down a strong Palace defense that managed several impressive results against top five opposition last season, including wins versus Chelsea and Everton and draws against Liverpool and Everton.

5:58 PM EST: Crystal Palace face Philadelphia having kicked off their American tour by playing the Columbus Crew three days earlier in an entertaining 2-2 draw. Meanwhile Philadelphia approach the match with mixed feelings, having salvaged a draw against Chicago late on but still remaining just outside the last playoff spot currently held by the New England Revolution. Ahead of the game, Crystal Palace's website regarded it as their “toughest toughest test of the tour,” and Philadelphia Interim Manager Jim Curtin gave every indication that it would be. Despite the intentions of Interim Manager Curtin, it remains to be seen whether the match will really provide a welcomed test and a possible confidence booster for the Union or just an unnecessary distraction in a vital period in the league. Curtin is expected to field a full strength squad for at least the first half of play, including a first start for defender Austin Berry since the 5-3 defeat to the New England Revolution on May 17th , a first start for on loan striker Brian Brown, and the retention of Zac MacMath as the starting goalkeeper.
