On Tuesday, Manchester United and Inter Milan will face off in the group stages of the Guinness International Champions Cup. Both teams enter this game having won their first game of the tournament, as United beat AS Roma 3-2 and Inter beat Real Madrid 1-1 (3-2 on penalties).

Going into the game, there is far more intrigue placed on United rather than Inter. United enter this year's Barclays Premier League season on the back of their worst league result since the early 1990s. David Moyes, Sir Alex Ferguson's anointed successor, failed in his task of continuing United's glory years. So, this season a new manager has taken the reins.

Louis Van Gaal has transitioned from leading the Netherlands to their third place finish in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil to taking the helm at United. In their two preseason friendlies, a 7-0 humiliation of the LA Galaxy in the Chevrolet Cup and the victory over Roma, he has experimented with the same formation he implemented at the World Cup. Van Gaal seems to prefer calling it a 3-4-3, but in reality it has looked more like a 3-4-1-2 or a 5-2-1-2.

He has utilized Juan Mata as the creative focal point in behind Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck with Ander Herrera and either Darren Fletcher or Tom Cleverley in the center of midfield. Van Gaal has pushed Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw forward as wing backs with Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones at center back. It will be interesting to see if Van Gaal utilizes the same formation in this game or if he looks to experiment further.

This writer would not be surprised to see a slight tweak in Van Gaal's system as United struggled for creativity against Roma. In spite of looking very impressive in their demolition of the Galaxy, they looked labored going forward for the first 35 minutes against Roma. It would be 10 minutes of brilliance from Wayne Rooney that changed the game. Look for Van Gaal to potentially give more minutes to Shinji Kagawa and Wilfried Zaha as he looks for added creativity.

Inter will likely operate in a similar formation to United and this hopefully won't lead to both teams just passing the ball around and waiting for the other to make a mistake. Another interesting storyline is that former United captain Nemanja Vidic will line up against his old team.  Hopefully, he will get a warm reception from both sets of fans and his play will contribute to an open game from both teams.

Both of these teams have looked decent in preseason play so far, so this will hopefully shape up to be a good game all-around.
