The New England Revolution beat the Chicago Fire on Sunday 2-1 with an impressive comeback. The victory was their fourth straight, and it takes them within three points of Sporting Kansas City for second place in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile for Chicago, it is a case of a wasted opportunity.

It took the Revs a long time to get going in the game, and the first three great chances fell to Chicago. Sanna Nyassi should have opened the scoring in the 14th minute after a lightning fast break. Larentowicz won the ball back, and some quick passing from Watson, Cocis, and Alex saw Amarikwa running in behind. He unselfishly squared to Nyassi, but his costless header sailed just wide. The man from Gambia would open the scoring in the 28th minute after another great ball in from Amarikwa. His industrious work down the left wing won the ball back, and his cross found the Gambian who flicked a header into the side netting to put the Fire ahead.

Nyassi should have scored again just two moments later after taking the ball right off Jermaine Jones' foot. The World Cup veteran was caught dawdling in possession, and the striker just picked his pocket and went away. He got in 1-on-1 with Shuttleworth but his curling effort went off the post. It should have been 3-0 Chicago after half an hour.

Unfortunately for the Fire, football is not a game of ifs and second chances, and the Boston side would make them pay for it. In the 37th minute, Jones nearly made up for his error as he came inches away from an equalizer. A delicious set piece delivery from Lee Nguyen found the midfielder on the back post, but he fired his shot just over the bar. But there was no despair for Revolution fans as the equalizer came just four minutes later, through teenage starlet Diego Fagundez. The goal was created by Nguyen, whose run into the box created space, and then his chipped cross to the back post found Fagundez all alone to cushion the header home.

In the second half, Chicago seemed to know they'd had a chance to put the game to bed and hadn't. They struggled to create anything going forward, and it was no surprise to see substitute Charlie Davies put New England ahead on 60 minutes. Jermaine Jones picked the ball up in his own half, went on a 30 yard run while holding off three defenders and then slide the ball straight through the middle of the defense and into the path of Davies, who calmly slotted the ball past Sean Johnson.

It was a very impressive performance for New England, and they did very well to take advantage of Chicago's mistakes to get the three points. Lee Nguyen was masterful yet again, and he is earning a place in the discussion for MLS MVP. For Chicago, this can only be looked at as a case of three points dropped. New England have been playing so well they would not have come into tonight looking for much, but should have been 3-0 up after 30 minutes. This match serves only to muddle the Eastern Conference Playoff picture further. And it will be fun to look. Check back here with us at VAVEL USA for your latest MLS news.
