Gilberto thought he had finally ended Toronto FC's futility streak as he tapped the ball past Bakary Soumare and behind keeper Sean Johnson in the 90th minute. Within seconds, the TFC players would react in shock and anger as referee David Gantar instead called a foul on Gilberto, ending a chance of a crucial comeback.

At the beginning of the match, Chicago Fire immediately attacked TFC and the depleted backline allowed for much scoring opportunity against Joe Bendik. Finally, Jamaica international Lovel Palmer would sneak in between the defense and head in Sanna Nyassi's cross at the 11 minute mark and it looked to be another disaster for Toronto FC who have been sinking rapidly for the past month.

The match would see many players fall to the pitch due to poor field conditions. Before the game Fire head coach Frank Yallop would apologize about the terrible field conditions caused by a combination of bad weather and too much activity on the turf.

As the match progressed, TFC fought to maintain possession and they would only get a single harmless shot in the early stages. Michael Bradley began to take control in directing his team mates as TFC slowly started to pick up more energy and drive but could not find a direct line to the net. Alex would find space only for the shot to be deflected by Bendik to keep the deficit at one.

In the 56th minute, Bendik interfered with Grant Ward in the box setting up a penalty by Jeff Larentowicz. Bendik read the shot to perfection clinically stopping both the penalty and the ensuing bullet on the rebound. The play gave TFC a new life and the visitors went on the attack.

The entrance of subs Dwayne De Rosario and Luke Moore further ignited the struggling TFC who had failed to find the back of the net for three straight games. At the 89th minute, a Jackson corner let to a shifty header by Gilberto with Dwayne De Rosario finding the net and ending the horrific scoring drought.

Soon after Gilberto’s' goal being called back, TFC would continue to pounce on the smoldering Fire and Mark Bloom’s late cracker was denied by Sean Johnson. Michael Bradley and his team mates would surround Gantar demanding an explanation as to what appeared to be a robbery in the Windy City. After the match De Rosario emphasized that his club refused to give up. In reference to the questionable call, Bradley told a reporter that Ganter "is just not good enough."

Though TFC leave Chicago disappointed with only a 1 point result, it does keep Toronto FC in the playoff picture trailing both Philadelphia and Columbus by three points with one game in hand.

TFC also thrived in in a dicey situation involving their star forward.

It was said by TFC that injured DP striker Jermain Defoe would be making a return to action late in September. However, MLSE President Tim Leiweke told Ryerson University students that his feeling was  "If you don't want to be here, get the hell out of the way", in response to persistent reports that Defoe desires to go back in England.

Gaining a key point with so much friction surrounding the club can be taken as minor victory, and head coach Greg Vanney who earned his first point hopes to carry the momentum forward against Chivas USA at BMO Field next weekend.

As for the Fire, the club remain in 9th place, seven points from a playoff spot and face a stern test at home against top of the table DC United.
