Toronto FC will miss out on the playoffs yet again, continuing the longest streak in MLS history after their 1-1 draw at Montreal Impact on Saturday. The Reds have yet to make it to the playoffs in franchise history, and needed a win today to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. The loss now means that Columbus Crew and New York Red Bulls have clinched playoff berths, although who will finish in fourth versus fifth is still up in the air.

The loss today closes the books on yet another forgettable season for Toronto. After the loss of Tim Lewieke, they have appeared a franchise without direction. Jermain Defoe has not clicked, and it now looks as if he will return to familiar Barclays Premier League confines in January while front office fighting has played out in the local press.

It has been an even more difficult season for the Impact. In just their third season in MLS, they have regressed, and will finish this season bottom of the Eastern Conference. In spite of experiencing a slight uptick in league form, they have just 27 points. Their saving graces have been in the Canadian Championship, which they won, and in the CONCACAF Champions League where they knocked out Red Bull New York to advance to the quarterfinals.

Today's Eastern Canada derby was a proper rivalry game, and one that neither side really deserved to win. A couple of meaty challenges early on provided a precedent for the rest of match, and it continued in the same vein. Sadly, like most rivalry games, it ended in a draw.

Key Moments

20': GOAL! A cross was deflected towards Warren Creavalle, and as it fell he hit a lovely side-foot volley that found its way into the side netting. 1-0 Toronto, and a well-deserved lead.

39': GOAL! A terrific break from the Impact leads to a lovely Felipe Martins strike from the top of the box for a goal. A quick, flowing move forward found the ball at the feet of Andres Romero, who slipped the ball off to Felipe from 20 yards out and his strike found the top corner.

67': SAVE! A wonderfully worked corner routine ended with Felipe at the top of the box and the ball at his feet. He took his time, and ripped a strike at the top corner that was well beaten away by Joe Bendik.

82': RED CARD! Montreal defender Heath Pearce is sent off for a late challenge on Dominic Oduro. As Oduro went past, Pearce's back foot came up and he appeared to cleat his back leg. Looked a good decision from the referee.

87': OVER THE BAR! Dwayne de Rosario is slipped in, and he's in on Evan Bush! The Canadian hero should score, but he's blazed the ball over the bar! Really should have scored there.

90+3': SAVE! Montreal man Marco di Vaio is played in 1-on-1, and in his second-to-last match ever he should win it but his shot is saved! Oh, that should have been the winner.

90+5': RED CARDS! Toronto's Jonathan Osorio and Montreal's Hassoun Camara. The bad blood between these two has really boiled over in stoppage time. This is a farce now. Montreal has had players going down with injuries and Toronto has been accusing them of faking injuries, and they've started fighting each other. We'll be talking about this match for some time to come.
