The Montreal Impact gave Marco Di Vaio a good sendoff in the Italian’s final match with the club. Di Vaio scored the team’s only goal in the 26th minute and the Impact nearly stole a win over DC United had it not been for Fabian Espindola’s 86th minute equalizer to finish the match with a 1-1 scoreline.

The result meant that Montreal finished with the worst record in Major League Soccer while DC United will finish with the third best record in the league. DC United will host the MLS Cup Final if they win the Eastern Conference and somebody other than Seattle or Los Angeles wins in the West. Both of these clubs will see their seasons start early next year as they were the only two clubs from the league to qualify for the knockout rounds of the CONCACAF Champions League.

Marco Di Vaio scored the first goal of the game in the 26th minute after slipping in behind the United defense. He took the ball on his own charging towards Bill Hamid and fired a low shot past the keeper to give Montreal the 1-0 lead. It was Di Vaio’s 9th goal of the season and the 34th in his MLS career.

Fabian Espindola leveled the score in the 86th minute with a low drive that beat Evan Bush to the near corner. Espindola played a short corner to Samuel Inkoom who fed the ball back to him. He cut towards the center of the pitch before firing that low shot. There was nothing that Bush could do about that one.

The regular season has come to a close for the Montreal Impact as they will look at their roster to figure out who they will protect during the upcoming expansion draft. DC United has clinched the top seed in the Eastern Conference and will play the winner of the wild-card game on Thursday. Their opponent will be either Columbus Crew, Sporting Kansas City or New York Red Bulls.
