On Sunday at 1:30 PM ET, the New York Red Bulls will play host to the biggest match in the history of their franchise. When they host the New England Revolution on Sunday afternoon, they will take one of their biggest rivals with the chance to set up their second ever trip to the MLS Cup Final

For so long, New York have been taunted for being the "smaller team" in New England. New England and DC United, their two biggest rivals, are two of the most successful clubs in the league's history. However, last year they won their first major trophy in the 2013 Supporter's Shield, and this year they have a golden chance to win MLS Cup.

This season is starting to look as if it was written for New York. MLS leading scorer Bradley Wright-Phillips and second-leading assister Thierry Henry fired them into the playoffs, and it has been a Cinderella story in the postseason. They came from a goal down to Sporting Kansas City in the Eastern Conference Wild-Card game, beat DC United in the Conference Semis, and now have a chance to knock off New England.

Meanwhile, New England have been the hottest team in the league since August. Lee Nguyen has been announced as one of the three finalists for MLS MVP, and his 18 goals this season are far more than any other midfielder and fourth in the league. Nguyen was called into the USMNT set-up by Jurgen Klinsmann last week, and he has been simply sublime this season.

While Nguyen has been superb all season long, the midseason signing of USA international Jermaine Jones is what completed this team. While manager Jay Heaps has attempted to play a 4-1-4-1 all season long, the signing of Jones completed that formation.

New England have rocketed up the standings, and in the playoffs vanquished Columbus Crew, the only other team who could have laid a claim to the "hottest team in MLS" moniker. Heading into this one, most pundits are picking New England but a rivalry like this always has the potential for a surprise.

While not the hottest team in the league, New York will be confident heading into this one. They were victorious in both meetings this season, winning 2-0 on June 8th and 2-1 on August 2nd.

However, the one other potential indicator of how this one will play out is form over their last five matches, where New England hold the advantage. They have won four and drawn one in their last five while New York have won three and lost two. Yet, the beauty of this match and playoff football in general is that no one knows what will happen. And we can't wait to see it play out.
