The Chicago Fire's postseason rebuilding project continued on Tuesday as they completed the signing of former youth teamer Michael Stephens from Bob Bradley's Stabæk in the Norwegian Tippeligaen. Stephens began his footballing career with the Fire's developmental team before spending four years with the LA Galaxy where he made 94 appearances.

After winning two MLS Cups and his contract running out after the 2013 season, Stephens made the move abroad. He signed on with Bob Bradley's Stabæk side, and made 30 league appearances with seven assists and one goal. Stephens has represented his country at U-20 and U-23 levels, but has never vaulted himself into contention under Jurgen Klinsmann.

He will be hoping this move reignites his career, and in a statement released today Stephens said: “It’s very exciting. I’ve been a fan of the club for a long time – since the inaugural season I’ve been following the team. To get this opportunity is something I didn’t think I could pass up. I had a good experience playing with the Fire PDL team, I have connections to the club and to the area so it seemed like a really good opportunity for me."

Stephens joins striker Kennedy Igboananike and defender Joevin Jones as new signings for the club, and manager Frank Yallop appears excited by his signing. In a club statement, he said: "Michael is an experienced player with four valuable seasons as a professional under his belt. He’s a local product who is familiar with MLS and we’re glad to have him join our team.”

Stephens grew up a Fire fan, and is from Naperville, Illinois. He will join Mike Magee, Chris Ritter and Harry Shipp as local products.
