Real Salt Lake is a good team, but looked a little flustered and unsettled in the new 4-3-3 formation instead of the diamond formation they are used to playing in.

Good effort by the Union tonight, and the unfortunate call came on the penalty late in the game against Maurice Edu. However, if the Union had been told they would score three tonight against Real Salt Lake, they would have considered themselves lucky.

The play between the two sides has been pretty open, which is not something that Real Salt Lake fans usually see from their team. However, they are trying the 4-3-3 formation in comparison to the Union's 4-2-3-1 formation with Fernando Aristeguita being the lone striker. Aristeguieta has, however, been making Real Salt Lake pay when he gets the ball.

Good Evening and Welcome to VAVEL USA's coverage of tonight's matchup between the Union and Real Salt Lake LIVE from Rio Tinto Stadium, Jasmine Stefanik here with you sharing commentary as well as play-by-play.

We are currently about four hours and twenty five minutes from kickoff at Rio Tinto Stadium and the weather there now is clear and a balmy 67 degrees. The temperature at kickoff tonight will be between 61 and 65 degrees. We will join you back here LIVE on VAVEL USA when we get closer to the starting time in Sandy, UT.

Tonight’s match officials are Referee Allen Chapman; Assistant Referees (bench side) Corey Rockwell and (opposite side) Mike Rottersman, and Fourth Official Tyler Ploeger. It is unknown if Silviu Petrescu would have been assigned to this matchup, however now it is known as he was suspended for blown calls in last week’s Philadelphia Union home opener at PPL Park against the Colorado Rapids.

Union Head Coach Jim Curtin has not been at the helm for a matchup between the two sides, whereas Jeff Cassar has only one matchup under his belt (last season’s draw between the two teams at PPL Park).

The last five meetings between these two teams date all the way back to June 2011 and include four draws and one Real Salt Lake win. In all, there are seven meetings between these two clubs and Real Salt Lake has a record of 2-0-5 while the Union are looking for their first win against Real Salt Lake with a record of 0-2-5.

Philadelphia Union Head Coach Jim Curtin has said that it is possible his lineup might mimic the new lineup of Real Salt Lake and Head Coach Jeff Cassar in a 4-3-3 type setup. However, with the injury of Sapong, the two most likely candidates to see the starting XI for Philadelphia will be Cristian Maidana or Zach Pfeffer. Union fans, however, believe that the more likely of the two would be Maidana replacing Sapong in the 4-3-3 formation, as he was substituted at halftime last weekend when Sapong took the ball to the face and was injured.

Real Salt Lake made some changes of their own in the offseason losing General Manager Garth Lagerwey, as well as Midfielder Ned Grabavoy, Defenders Chris Wingert and Nat Borchers, as well as Forward Robbie Findley. However, they also reacquired Defender Jamison Olave, as well as signing some other midfielders and defenders in the offseason and via the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, so there will be help to replace the players lost. In the new era that has begun, however, they will also need Luis Gil to step up for the injured Joao Plata at the forward position.

This will be the only time these two teams meet in the 2015 season, and both are looking for their first goals of the season. Last week’s Union match ended in a 0-0 draw with the Colorado Rapids, and Real Salt Lake played to a draw on the road against the Portland Timbers at Providence Park.

Additions to the season’s roster include C.J. Sapong who was acquired from Sporting Kansas City, but was injured in the first half of last week’s match and will miss time with a concussion and fractured bone in his cheek, and also missing time again will be backup Goalkeeper Andre Blake who is recovering from surgery on his left knee. Among others listed on the injury report for the Philadelphia Union are Midfielder Danny Cruz who has been dealing with a hamstring strain and new acquisition Forward Fernando Aristeguieta who seems to have strained his left calf in his debut last week. Real Salt Lake injuries include Forward Joao Plata, Midfielder John Stertzer, and Defender Justin Glad.

Much has changed for the Philadelphia Union in the offseason as they prepared for season number six. Head Coach Jim Curtin was officially given the title after the season ended, as he was able to bring them close to a postseason run and get them to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final at PPL Park where they lost to Seattle Sounders FC. Also, there was an expansion draft which saw Pedro Ribeiro leave to join the new Orlando City Soccer Club. The Union also traded Midfielder Amobi Okugo to Orlando City after reaching a deal to make Maurice Edu a permanent member of the team.

The last time these two teams met was April 12, 2014 at PPL Park when they played to a 2-2 draw. Goals were scored by Real Salt Lake’s Luke Mulholland and Kyle Beckerman as well as Philadelphia’s Maurice Edu and Andrew Wenger.

This weekend's matchup will be played Saturday night at 9:30pm EST and will be televised on The Comcast Network (Channel 27) and MLS Live

VAVEL USA's coverage of the Philadelphia Union this season continues with the matchup between the Union and Real Salt Lake, and joining you tonight will be Jasmine Stefanik.
