CHESTER, PA- Vincent Nogueira scored the go-ahead in stoppage time, and rookie GK John McCarthy shined, making three saves in his MLS debut in front of a sell-out PPL Park as the Philadelphia Union notched their first win of the season taking down David Villa and New York City FC 2-1 in the first of a home-and-home series for the two sides.

"I had tears of joy. I really did," said GK John McCarthy with thoughts on his first MLS start. "I was crying because that’s what you always dream of as a kid to root for a team and being able to play for them one day."

"I want to thank the fans to have a packed house and have been as loud as it was, as poor as our record has been it was impressive," said head coach Jim Curtin following the game.

"It wasn’t our best second half for sure in a lot of ways in MLS you look across the league there’s been teams that get outplayed and win and there are some where we've outplayed and lost."

In the first half, the Union did a fine job a controlling possession and created some chances early which included a shot from Eric Ayuk, but it hit the side netting. The Union continued taking command of the flow of the game with some nice passes into the box from Vincent Nogueira and gave New York keeper Josh Saunders a tough time early on.

New York did catch a couple of breaks at goal and nearly had a shot at rookie keeper McCarthy from Ned Grabavoy, but was gobbled up for his first save of the game. But in the 27th minute, the Union would strike first with a goal from Zach Pfeffer -assisted by Erik Ayuk and Sebastien LeToux to give them a 1-0 lead. The goal was first credited to Ayuk, but after further review it was given to Pfeffer.  By the end of the first half, New York appeared to show frustration. The Union ended the half with seven shots including two on goal.

In the second half, the Union would continue disrupting New York from getting into the final third, but things changed quickly when New York would get the equalizer at the 55th minute with a tap-in goal from David Villa. Later on in the 59th minute, the Union would encounter a scary situation when Sebastien LeToux crashed into the LED banner near the far corner and appeared to be cut on his right forearm was taken off the field and was substituted by C.J. Sapong. Sapong would make for quick work with a close shot on goal in the 66th minute but was saved by Saunders. The Union would bring in Conor Casey for Erik Ayuk in the 71st minute to try to add a needed spark. New York tried for goal again shortly later, but with a high jump from McCarthy to save it, the game remained 1-1.

The Union nearly took the lead in the 77th minute with a cross from Casey to Pfeffer, but the shot just went wide. The Union would make their final sub with Christian Maidana coming in for Zach Pfeffer in the 82nd minute. New York again struggled with a go-ahead goal by missing a close free kick and the match remained tied. In the 89th minute, Nogueira had a clear shot on goal but just missed wide. The Union would get the game winner in stoppage time by way of a cross from Andrew Wenger. With a nice ball into the box, Saunders got a piece of it and deflected towards the center of the penalty spot which was then driven in by Noguiera that send the 18,603 fans at PPL in a joyous frenzy.  Both teams will meet again this Thursday at Yankee Stadium. UPDATE: Sebastian Le Toux did suffer a laceration on his right forearm, and recieved 5 stitches.
