The New York Red Bulls have signed Shaun Wright-Phillips to a contract. SWP joins his brother, star striker Bradley Wright-Phillips. The details of the contract were not released. Shaun and Bradley are the son of former England and Arsenal striker Ian Wright. SWP is the older brother to Bradley.

Career in England

When Shaun was 16 years old, he started at the Manchester City youth academy and quickly progressed to the first team. He spent six years with City, and became a fully fledged England international. In 2005, SWP left Man City in a £21 million move to Stamford Bridge. He stayed with Chelsea until 2008. In 2008 he moved back to Man City until 2011, where he established himself as a regular for England. Wright-Phillips was a member of the 2010 England World Cup squad, and appeared as a substitute in England's Group Stage matches against the United States and Algeria. In 2011 he moved to Loftus Road and Queens Park Rangers, but was released at the end of this past season. SWP has been training with the Red Bulls since he first came to New York last month for his brother's wedding. 2004 was the last time that BWP and SWP played together, when they both played for Man City.

Career honors

SWP has won the FA Cup twice, the FA Community Shield, the Barclays Premier League, and the Football League Cup. He also won the Football League Championship playoff to get QPR promoted to the Premier League in may of 2014. Over the course of his Premier League career he scored 31 goals over 299 appearances.

Good deal for New York

The key for the Red Bulls was that they landed him on a non Designated Player contract. This leaves New York with two DP slots available; their only current Designated Player is Bradley Wright-Phillips.

Red Bulls Sporting Director Ali Curtis said, “He can play a number of positions for us and is an excellent fit in our locker room. When we evaluated the unique set of circumstances along with the quality that Shaun has, it became apparent that we needed to be aggressive about adding Shaun to our club. We are pleased that he will be wearing a Red Bull jersey and we can't wait for him to take the field."

It's not just the executives who are impressed by SWP. Manager Jesse Marsch seems quite excited by the signing as well, saying, “We are pleased to add Shaun to our club. Shaun has performed at the highest levels of the game for his entire career, in the Premier League and on the international level, and brings a wealth of talent and experience.” Marsch went on to add: "He has been training here and we have seen his professionalism day in and day out. We think he is a tremendous addition both on the field and as a veteran presence in our locker room." Both Wright-Phillips brothers seem excited to play together again.

BWP and SWP are one of five groups of brothers currently in MLS. Shaun Wright Phillips is available for selection this Saturday at Philadelphia Union.
