The game started out slowly as the teams fought the rainy conditions to play. But in the 18th minute, the match was suspended as lightning was present around the stadium. The lightning delayed this game 110 minutes before kickoff and now the teams were forced to wait for another 67 minutes before restarting again. But it was the Chicago Fire who came out of the gate and struck first.

It started when Razvan Cocis found David Accam with a long ball from the other side of the field. Accam took a couple of dribbles into the box and struck it inside the near post to give the Fire the lead with half an hour gone in the match. The Fire almost got a second when Eric Gehrig's header from a set piece had to be pushed away by Tally Hall just moments later. It was the type of fast start Chicago needed and Orlando City needed to respond. They got their response seven minutes later when Gehrig deflected the ball into his own net. A ball swung in for Cyle Larin went over the Orlando City man and off Gehrig to make it level for both teams at 1-1 in the 37th minute.

Orlando City should have been ahead in the 41st minute as Larin's cross was not picked up by Sean Johnson, which allowed Lewis Neal a clean shot on goal. However, he sent the ball sailing over the bar as Orlando missed a golden chance to take the lead going into the half.

After halftime, it was all Orlando City. They had all the major chances in this game. They almost struck on the counter as Kaka blazed a shot just wide of the post. Then in the 81st minute, Carlos Rivas found Larin's centering cross and fired it off the goal post as Orlando City pushed for the late winner. It seemed as if it would all be in vain as the Lions had yet to find a winner, but they would have one more chance.

Orlando City had a corner late on that saw a second ball fall to the feet of Darwin Ceren and he struck well with his right foot. It took a leaping save from Johnson to deny Ceren the game winning goal and that was the end of a long night for both teams.

The point allowed both teams to jump spot in the standings. For the Fire, it moved the team out of the cellar in the East as they jumped up to ninth place over the Philadelphia Union. Only two points behind the sixth spot, Chicago could make a late playoff run and they have to continue to get points. For Orlando City, it moved them up to 6th, the last playoff spot. It will be hard for them to stay there as Montreal, who is a point behind and has games in hand, will surely look to take back that spot.
