The Philadelphia Union fell to the New England Revolution 1-0 on Saturday night thanks to a 51st minute strike from Diego Fagundez.

It was “difficult because everyone knows the result that went on tonight, we missed a big opportunity,” Philadelphia manager Jim Curtin said after the game.

The first half featured both sides getting opportunities on net. In the seventh minute, New England had the first real opportunity of the game when Diego Fagundez hit a Charlie Davies cross over the net and into The River End. Then, in the ninth minute, the Philadelphia Union almost opened up the scoring when a nearly wide-open Tranquillo Barnetta received the ball at the top of the six off a CJ Sapong cross. Then, Barnetta fumbled the ball a second and sent his shot wide.

When the halftime whistle blew, both teams walked off the field with no breakthrough despite opportunities. In the first half, Philadelphia created four shots overall but only two of them on target. Similarly, the Revolution created two shots of goal on five total shots.

The second half would prove to be fateful for the Revolution. Only six minutes into the second half, New England would break the 0-0 tie. In the 51st minute, New England received a throw in around midfield, which was played to Davies. Then, Davies flicked it to the breaking Diego Fagundez. Fagundez drove deep into the heart of the Union defense and shot past the closing-in Richie Marquez as well as Andre Blake to give the Revolution a 1-0 lead.

With their one goal lead, New England never looked back in the second half as they dominated the rest of the match. Philadelphia, despite creating eight shots in the second half, did not have a single shot on net in the second half. In total, out of 12 shots on the night, Philadelphia only had two on net.

“We didn’t capitalize,” Curtin added in his press conference. “Credit to [New England] they made it difficult for us the whole night. I thought they were a little sharper and cleaner on the ball, just all the little things to get a win on the road.”

To add insult to injury, in the last minute of stoppage time, Philadelphia Union midfielder Cristian Maidana received a red card after he spit in the direction of Revolution midfielder Lee Nguyen after Maidana pushed Nguyen over.

Maidana will at least miss next Saturday’s game and will most likely have his case placed before the MLS Disciplinary Committee, where he could see more games added to his suspension.

This loss significantly hurts any chance the Union had of making the playoffs. On Saturday, after Montreal and New York City both lost, the Union had a chance to move into sixth place with a win. Now, the Union sit in last place, based on points per game, with seven games left to salvage their season.

In their next game, the Union travel across the country to face San Jose next Saturday. New England will return home Saturday to face Orlando City as well Saturday.
