Stop the presses if you have heard this before. David Beckham says they are getting closer to a possible stadium announcement. It seems like we hear this almost every week (okay, not really). It’s time to put up or shut up for David.

Beckham recently did an interview with Sky Sports and that is when he mentioned they we “getting closer”.  "We are getting closer. There's a lot of positivity around the city and I've always said that Miami is a place that will love a team. They need a team. They want a team. Hopefully in the next couple of months we'll be able to make an announcement."

Yawn.

This saga has been going on for about 18 months. That is when he exercised his contractual option to start an expansion team.  This obviously doesn’t all fall on Beckham. The city of Miami has not been helping him at all in supporting a suitable location for an MLS stadium.

David states “I've always said that Miami is a place that will love a team. They need a team. They want a team.” Umm David, did you forgot they already had a team and actually won the Supporters’ Shield way back in 2001. You know, the year they became extinct.

Did you forget that when Miami had a team, nobody came out and supported them? According to mlsattendace, they average 10,284, 8,686, 7,460 and 11,177 from 1998-2001 in a stadium with a capacity of 20,450. A stadium that was renovated in 1998 to be a soccer specific facility and they averaged only 9,403 in those four years.

Has MLS changed since the last time Miami had a team? Of course it has. It has gone to heights unimaginable to some people in the United States. Do you really want to put a stadium in the city that has failed in the past?

How about you take your expansion club to another city that will actually support an MLS team when they get an MLS team. Sacramento would be a good choice for an expansion club in MLS, but you could run into the same issues you are having in Miami. Finding a location.

Good luck in your search David as well as naming your stadium. Here's a name you can use #NeverGoingToGetAStadiumInMiamiBeckhamRealUnitedFC. Just give credit where credit is due.
