English substitute James Wilson toe-poke goal sank the Americans 1-0 on Thursday at Deepdale Stadium in Preston, England.

The Manchester United prospect entered the match at the 61st minute, and it took him very little time to make an impact.

Duncan Watmore was at the edge of the left hand side of the penalty box when he broke the U.S. backline. The Sunderland player managed to squeeze by the American goalie and a defender before he sent the cross into the heart of the box. Then Wilson completed his run and just simply tapped the ball to give the Three Lions the eventual 1-0 victory at the 72nd minute.

However, even before that goal the English were dominating the Yanks. The English swift attack forced both American goalies Cody Cropper and Zach Steffen to be on high alert for the entire match.

Without their solid performances the Three Lions might have easily won the game by three or even four goals. England produced 14 shots and got four of them on target.

The Yanks attack was largely based on countering, since England controlled most of the possession. However, the offense of the Americans constantly fell short as they finished the game with just two shots on target.

The problem for the Americans was not their creativity, as they did manage to string some passes together against the physical English defense. Instead their downfall was their execution in the final third.

Forwards Mario Rodriguez and Alonso Hernandez struggled to hold the ball against the aggressive defense. A good portion of the Yanks attacks ended in the final third because of cheap giveaways.

Since the U.S. midfielders were too busy attempting to catch up to the shadows of the English players, their offense quickly faded. The only way they were able to slow down the English was by playing physical. In result, the Americans led the game with 16 fouls and ran out of gas in the process.

However, Wilson’s fresh legs rapidly crushed the Americans chances of pulling out a draw in England. Now U.S. head coach Andi Herzog will need to quickly turn things around. Their next match is only four days away, where the Yanks will take on Qatar on Tuesday at Gigg Lane in Bury, England.
