Defender Nemanja Vidic's contract with Inter Milan was terminated by mutual consent on January 18th. The 34-year-old former Serbian international parted ways with the club following a year and a half stint where appearances proved scarce and form seemed lacking.

Struggles in Italy

Vidic struggled to break into the starting 11 this season following the arrival of manager Roberto Mancini, who preferred the younger options of Italian international Andrea Rannochia and Brazilian international Juan Jesus. He made 23 appearances and scored one goal during his stint at Inter Milan.

Links with Chicago, DC United

Now a free agent, Vidic is linked with a move to the MLS, with DC United and the Chicago Fire listed as possible destinations. Chicago, who are in desperate need of established defenders, would benefit greatly from Vidic's experience. According to ESPNFC's Taylor Twellman, this was a common rumor repeated throughout last week's MLS Combine.

History of the player

Previous to his time at Inter Milan, Vidic gained worldwide recognition at Manchester United, where he established himself as one of football's top defenders, making 211 appearances between 2006 and 2014 and scoring 15 goals. While with United, Vidic won just about all there is to win in English football: five Barclays Premier League Titles, three League Cups, one UEFA Champions League crown and one FIFA Club World Cup. Vidic and former United defender turned pundit Rio Ferdinand formed the backbone of one of the strongest defenses in European football. He also captained the side from 2011 till his departure from the club.

Does Chicago need defensive help?

The Fire finished bottom of MLS last season with a mere 30 points from 34 matches, and had the league's joint-worst defense as they conceded 58 goals. General Manager Nelson Rodriguez has been promising defensive reinforcements, and Vidic would certainly fit the bill.
