After having a career year that landed him the 2015 Orlando City Players’ Player of the Year award, Darwin Ceren has landed himself a new contract. The midfielder signed a two year contract extension with a two year option after that with the Lions.
Career year for Orlando
In his first year for Orlando, Ceren scored two goals and added two assists. However, beyond the stats he made a big impact. He ranked fifth in the league in passes per game and was 11th in pass completion percentage. He linked up with Kaka many times in the attack and was the man to watch for most of the season in Orlando.
Sitting in a midfield role, the Salvadorian international was a key part in Orlando City's 7th place finish in the East. Although 7th is outside of the playoffs, for a first year expansion team that is a solid start for the franchise.
He has also captained El Salvador and has made 36 appearances for his country. He also made three appearances in the Gold Cup for Salvador.
Smart move for Orlando
This was a good move for Orlando to lock up Ceren for at least two more years. He also has a two year option at the end of the contract, making it a maximum of four years.
"We are really pleased to have Darwin staying with us for many years to come," said Orlando President Phil Rawlins in a press conference (via MLSsoccer.com).
This will be a big year for Orlando SC as this is their second year in MLS. Last season, they were given a pass for their mistakes as they were an expansion club but now they are expected to build on those mistakes. With Kaka back and Ceren locked up for two more years, they have solidified their midfield for a while.
