It's been a rather interesting offseason for Sporting Kansas City. They were eliminated by the Timbers on penalties after Saad Abdul-Salaam's penalty hit by post, something that can only be looked at now as a sign of things to come for Portland. Despite all that, it was a decent season for Sporting KC, claiming the US Open Cup for the 3rd Time (2002, 2012 and 2015).

After a promising season and a quick ending to their postseason hopes, SKC signed Brad Davis from the Houston Dynamo. He's a veteran player who will surely bring a voice to the changing room.

After that is when the offseason went off track for Sporting. A little more than a week ago it was announced forward Krisztian Nemeth is being transferred to Qatari club Al-Gharafa. The club payed $3 million for the player, according to FOX Sport's Grant Wahl.

This left many fans and reporters in Kansas City stunned and confused. After all, Nemeth scored 23 goals in 28 games for KC in his debut MLS season. On top of that, he was awarded 2015 Goal of the Year for his wonderful passage of play and finish against Portland on October 3rd.

Shortly after the transfer went through, Nemeth took to Facebook, leaving a heartfelt message to the fans and gave some notes on his surprising departure. Nemeth claims he would have stayed for 1/3 of what his future salary would've been. He apologized to the fans and thanked the Sporting staff. Despite Nemeth claiming his leaving was not about money, Head Coach Peter Vermes spoke to the contrary earlier this week on a local talk show. Vermes said the move was all about Nemeth's future contract and remuneration. But, clubs and players squabbling over contracts and money is nothing new.

Why It Makes Sense

Although the move is surprising at first, when looked at on a deeper level, it works out for everyone involved. Nemeth was most likely going to miss a large chunk of the regular season due to his Euro 2016 obligations with Hungary. Why would Sporting want to pay a player more for him to play a 1/3 of the season? They didn't. Kansas City instead added Brad Davis, Nuno Andre Coelho, and Justin Mapp. Soni Mustivar and Paulo Nagamura were also given new contracts, and Sporting will look to add reinforcements up front to support Dom Dwyer.
