Still five months from playing their first MLS regular season game, Atlanta United has made yet another splash. On Tuesday, the 2017 expansion side announced the hiring of Gerardo “Tata” Martino as the first head coach in the club’s history.

Why Martino as Atlanta's first-ever head coach?

Atlanta United President Darren Eales commented on why Martino was chosen as the club’s first-ever head coach in a press release.

We are delighted that a manager of Gerardo’s caliber and pedigree will be leading our team into our inaugural season. His deep experience and success at both the club and international levels speak for itself, and his vision and approach aligns very well with our club philosophy. We’re confident in his ability to help build a winning culture both on and off the pitch.”

The owner of Atlanta United, Arthur Blank, also commented on the signing.

“This is an incredibly exciting and historic day for our club. Gerardo brings an unprecedented level of international experience to our head coaching position that will be a valuable asset to our players and demonstrates the continuing growth of Major League Soccer. We’re thrilled he’s chosen to join our club and look forward to welcoming him to Atlanta.”

Carlos Bocanegra, Atlanta’s technical director, also commented on the hiring of Martino.

“Gerardo’s teams have always been organized and have displayed a fast and fluid style that aligns with how we intend to play. He’s also demonstrated a commitment to youth soccer, consistently proving his ability to enhance the progression of younger players. He’s a great fit for our club and I look forward to working with him to build a successful club.”

Previous head coaching experience

Most recently, Martino was the head coach of the Argentina National Team. He led Argentina on the international level for almost two years. During that time, his team made to two straight Copa America finals but ended up losing both to Chile in penalties. His previous stops at the coaching level include Barcelona (2013-2014), Newell’s Old Boys (2011-2013) and Paraguay (2007-2011).

Martino is happy to be Atlanta’s first coach; “I’m very happy to join Atlanta United as the first head coach in club history. This is an exciting time for MLS and I’m looking forward to the challenge of leading a team in an evolving league.  Atlanta United is a first-rate organization, and I’m very eager to get working and build one of the top clubs in MLS.”

According to the team press release, Martino will be announced as the head coach on Wednesday, September 28th at 10:00 am ET at a news conference. It will beed live on Atlanta United’s Facebook page.
