Sony announced three new phones today: the Xperia Z5, the Z5 Premium, and the Z5 Compact.

The Z5 comes in as a sort of standard model, while the Compact serves as the cheaper model and the Premium as the deluxe, more expensive model.

We decided to take a look into each phone and show just what each one offers.

Build

Each phone features an OmniBalance design - that is, an all-metal frame with a glass front and back. The standard Z5 and the Premium feature more defined, reinforced designs while the Compact has a continuously smooth design all-around.

The Premium comes in White, Graphite Black, and Gold. It is the largest of the three, measuring in at 154.4mm tall, 75.8mm wide and 7.8mm thin, and weighs 180g.

The standard Z5 comes in White, Graphite Black, Gold, and Green. It measures in at 146mm tall, 72mm wide and 7.3mm thin and weighs in at 154g.

The Compact comes in White, Graphite Black, Yellow, and Coral. Weighing 138g, it is 127mm tall 65mm wide and 8.9mm thin.

Each phone features a fingerprint sensor, but notably, they are located on the side of the phone rather than the front. All three are also IP68-rated water and dust resistant.

Displays

All three of these new handsets from Sony feature the same LCD IPS display technology and Sony's X-Reality boosting with sharp color display.

The Premium's display measures in at 5.5" and features the world's first 4K display on a smartphone, coming in with the best display of any phone. It has a 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution with 801ppi.

The standard Z5 features a 5.2-inch display with a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, good for 428ppi. This isn't very impressive when compared to other phones of this size, such as the LG G4 or the Samsung Galaxy S6 (both 2560 x 1440 with 577ppi), but it isn't quite terrible.

The Compact features a 4.6" display with a relatively weak 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and 323 ppi.

Hardware

All phones contain the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, featuring octa-core CPUs, 64-bit capabilities, and ultra-fast 4G LTE speeds.

Each phone also promises two days of battery life. The Premium features a 3430mAh battery, the standard Z5 encloses a 2900mAh battery, and the Compact is powered by a 2700mAh battery. All batteries are said to provide 5.5 hours of life after just 10 minutes of charging time.

The standard Z5 and the Premium feature 3gb of RAM and 32gb of internal storage. The Compact is less impressive, with 2gb of RAM and 16gb on-board storage. However, each phone features a MicroSD slot, allowing up to 200gb of external storage to be added.

Cameras

All cameras are capable of capturing 4K video with a 23mp back camera sensor and a 5mp front camera. The speed of the cameras are 0.03 seconds - considerably faster than the blink of a human eye.

The Wrap-Up

Obviously with a 4K display, the Premium is the strongest of the three devices. However, apart from that and the size difference, it doesn't have much on the standard Z5.

While the Compact isn't a terrible phone, it is quite obviously the weakest of the bunch and there are much better options out there.

It will be interesting to see just how much each of these phones will cost and when they will be released at Sony's IFA 2015 conference.
