No. 1 seed Serena Williams faced another tough test in the second round of the French Open today after crashing out in the same round to Garbine Muguruza last year. It took three sets 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 to take down world No. 104 Anna-Lena Friedsam who was looking for just her third main draw match win in 2015.

The first set was tight with both players having trouble holding serve. However, Friedsam managed to pull her serve together and go up 4-2. She dazzled the French crowd with her fierce forehand and bold play. The crowd firmly supported the underdog, with Friedsam feeding off their energy. The red clay neutralized the power of the American’s serve and Friedsam was able to pound her returns. Williams clawed back to even the set at 5-5, but double faulted in the 11th game to give Friedsam the chance to close the set out on her own serve. The German underdog held to close out the set at 7-5.

Like any true champion, Williams kept fighting in the second set, withholding pressure from Friedsam’s return game to even the set at 2-2. Then the No. 1 seed stepped up her return and broke to go up 4-2. The German broke right back to get back on serve at 4-3. However the pressure of facing the 19-time grand slam champion finally seemed to unnerve the qualifier and she lost serve, spraying a loose forehand. Williams held to close out the set 6-3, carrying the momentum going into the decider.

Williams kept hope alive for a 20th grand slam title, and took control of the third set, going up 2-0. Friedsam managed to pull out strong serves, and continued to play boldly, but could not manage to break the best serve in the women’s game. Serena never looked back after her early break and played a clean game to finish off the German 6-3 in the decider.

Williams will now face former No. 1 and two-time Australian Open champion, Victoria Azarenka in the third round. Azarenka nearly beat Williams in Madrid, but faltered on three match points. Azarenka will likely be seeking revenge, and will likely be Williams’s toughest test on her path to her third French Open championship.
