Germany's Sabine Lisicki, who was famously nicknamed "Boom Boom Bine" during the course of her run to the final here in Wimbledon two years ago, was slightly more consistent than her unseeded Slovak opponent, Jarmila Gajdosova, and took her chances in a tight two-setter, winning 7-5, 6-4 as the beautiful evening sun began to create shadows over the court.

It didn't look so good in the beginning though, as the 18th-seeded German got broken right away in a service game where there were two aces and two double faults each. She soon steadied the ship with a quick hold and breaking Gajdosova from 0-40 down firing three consecutive forehand return winners to get to deuce. After the pair exchanged service holds, it was the German who broke the Slovak to love, thanks to a lucky return which only just bounced over the net. Lisicki was unable to capitalize while serving for the set at 5-3 though with yet another double fault, of which she served seven in total, gifting the break to Gajdosova. Fast forward to a few games later and the Slovak found herself serving at 5-6 down and deuce. She double faulted and a point later the set was in Lisicki's bag when Gajdosova's backhand volley found the net.

At the start of the second set it was the German world number 18 who got off to a better start, going up a break 2-0. That didn't last for long as a mixture of errors from Lisicki and her opponent's shots finding their marks more often resulted in a four straight games for Gajdosova, who was now leading 4-2. There was enough time for another momentum change in this set however, as Lisicki came alive just in time. She held, broke and held again with three aces to get one game away from a win. Before you knew it, she broke Gajdosova once more to book a place in the next round.

The German who has been very open about her love for the grass courts of Wimbledon, the site of her greatest career triumphs, still has a lot to improve going into her second round match against the American Christina McHale. Keep an eye out for Sabine Lisicki over the next two weeks.
