The sixth seed's match against the unseeded Pablo Andujar was not as comfortable an affair as the former would have liked it to be. Tomas Berdych found himself a break down in just his second service game, after just having been a break point up on the Spaniard's serve. The first set remained extremely nerve-wracking as almost every game ended up being taken to the limit at multiple deuces, and Berdych broke back in the sixth game to level the score at 3-3. It was Andujar however, who managed to break the Czech's serve once again and hold to take the first set 6-4.

The second set saw Berdych coming back into his groove whilst Andujar's game flattened out completely. The higher seed was relentless, holding his serve and winning a total of 75 percent receiving points. He broke Andujar thrice to take the second set 6-0, after hitting ten winners.

Andujar pulled himself together in the third and kept the score level, matching Berdych's intensity until 3-3. The Czech however remained aggressive and broke in the eighth game—hitting three tremendous winners and forcing one error from Andujar to gain the advantage. He served out the set 6-3.

The Spaniard gave the match one last try in the fourth set by keeping up a high level of intensity and fight. Despite being broken in the third game, he broke Berdych's serve back immediately with some inventive volley winners to level the set once again. The two players traded breaks once more in the set in what was becoming an extremely close affair, but ultimately the set was destined to go to a tiebreak. Here, the Czech remained composed, hitting a return ace on Andujar's first serving point to gain the minibreak immediately. He kept up his dominance in the tiebreaker to win it 7-3 and seal the match.

Berdych can be happy with his tough win but will need to find more form and focus in the second week. He next plays the winner of Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon.
