While many tennis fans went ahead and penciled in Roger Federer to the quarters after a very friendly draw, not many expected Frenchmen Gilles Simon to make the final eight.

Federer and Simon will meet for the eighth time Wednesday afternoon, Federer leading the head to head 5-2. This will be no walk in the park for the seven-time Wimbledon champion as Simon has given him trouble throughout their careers. Four of their seven meetings have gone the distance, Simon winning their first two. The Frenchman, however, has not taken down Federer since 2008. Simon will need to play his best tennis for a chance at the semifinals, a feat that is well within grasp as he has played some of his best tennis of his career here at Wimbledon.

Simon wasn't as fortunate as the Swiss with a great draw. In the first round, he was matched up against former world number nine Nicholas Almagro. It's never any fun playing a former top 10 opponent in the first round of Wimbledon. Simon would inch out Almagro in three tight sets

Simon's play throughout Wimbledon has only improved since the first round. He has knocked out three current and former top 10 players in Almagro, Monfils, and his most impressive win coming against Tomas Berdych. His win against the Czech may have been his best career win to date, crushing him 6-3, 6-3, 6-2.

Federer had little to no trouble defeating Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in the Round of 16. He secured the 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 victory in a little over an hour. “It was a good match,” said Federer. “I got off to a good start and kept rolling. Maybe Roberto wasn’t at his very best. Midway through the second , he hurt himself. Still, he was out there and he was actually still moving okay, so I had to put him away, which I was able to do.”

Federer's test against Simon will be his toughest of the tournament, the Frenchman never seems to be intimidated going up on the big stage against Roger. They have played twice in Grand Slams, once at the Australian Open and the other at Roland Garros, each one going the distance. You can expect the usual fight out of Simon, but be ready for the grass court specialist to find his way into yet another Wimbledon semifinal.

Prediction: Federer in four sets.
