American number two Jack Sock expereinced one of the worst moments that could happen to him on a tennis court. Sock was cramping so badly in the fourth set, he was forced to retire. He collapsed on the court and was attended to by the medical staff and trainer and was carried off as Ruben Bemelmans advanced to the third round. Sock retired up two sets to one with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 1-2.

Sock outlasts the Belgian for the opener

It was already a strong start for Bemelmans with the quick hold. He soon followed that up with an even quicker break and consolidation to race out to a 3-0 lead. Sock got on the board in the fourth game before getting more aggressive and forcing more errors from the Belgian.

He would consolidate for three-all before breaking a second consecutive service game to make it 4-3. Sock had to save a break point in his following service game before he consolidated for 5-3. Both men held to finish out the set for a 6-4 finish to the American.

American moves within a set of the match

Things went from good to better for Sock to start the seond with a quick break of serve. The American, known for his heavy topspin forehand and big serve, used that lead to his advantage. That break would get him 2-0 and then up once again in the fifth game at 30.

He would consolidate for 5-1 but found himself in some trouble in the eighth game. The American saved a break opportunity, but gave one of the two breaks back. Like the end of the first set, both men held for another 6-4 scoreline to the American.

Bemelmans serves much better to take the third; Sock feels the heat

With temperatures in the 90s plus another humid day, ice towels were the players' best friends during these kinds of days. However, ice towels can only do so much during changeovers as proper fitness was the real key here.

It was a rather uneventful third set with only one break of serve as most of the games were held quite easily. Sock was broken in the eighth game which would be followed by Bemelmans consolidating to force a fourth set. The key stat here was that the Belgian won 71 percent of second serve points compared to a dreadful 17 percent for Sock.

Scary moment for Sock

Both men started off the set with a hold and then that's when the cramps hit. After hitting a serve in the third game, Sock began to clutch his left leg. He would not be able to move as he fell toward the ground and needed to be helped by an assistant.

A witness said that at one point, Sock's eyes rolled to the back of his head showing how severe the issue was. He was carried out by the trainer and security to a loud standing ovation. Bemelmans, like the class act he is, and how every player should be to be honest, walked to the other side of the net to make sure his opponent was okay as this victory meant very little with his opponent severely hurt.

Sock was seen limping around an atrium around the players' garden a couple of hours after the match still red-faced. The American has stated that although the retirement was disappointing, he is excited to be a part of the Davis Cup team. Bemelmans will meet Stan Wawrinka in the third round after he took out teen sensation Hyeon Chung in three tiebreaks.
