The players are warming up.

The match on Arthur Ashe is shortly about to begin as players make their way on court.

With Federer as the clear cut favorite, it's going to be interesting to see how Kohlschreiber reacts to that. The German always puts up a good fight when facing the Swiss maestro. Their last meeting was in Halle in the home country of Kohlschreiber. That matchup went three sets in the round of 32. Federer won the opening set before dropping the second. The Swiss number one would take the final set in a breaker to take the victory. As much as Kohlschreiber hates it, he's going to have to try something new or really hope Federer drops well below his current playing level to win. It's going to take some kind of Herculean effort for him to win.

The winner of this match will meet the winner of Isner-Vesely. The German and the American have met at the last three US Opens, all of them in the third round. All three matches went to the German, but none were in straight sets. Federer has a chance to end the streak of an Isner-Kohlschreiber showdown with a win tomorrow.

In his opening match, Kohlschreiber met fellow countryman and teen sensation Alexander Zverev. The height difference was massive the teen standing over 6'5'' and Kohlschreiber at 5'10''. It was a thrilling match as it went the distance, but the elder statesman showed off his strong mentality plus his experience in the end to win in five. He would meet Lukas Rosol next. The Czech player is one who can blow hot or cold on any given day. This time around, he blew cold as Kohlschreiber cruised to a straight sets victory.

Now onto the German. 29th-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber. Like Federer, he possesses a one-handed backhand and a solid serve and forehand, bur the Swiss is just a bit better in all three departments, giving him the edge.

Many were hoping to see another close showdown or maybe at least competitive because most knew Federer would not lose his opening round match. It was a complete beatdown, unlike Shanghai, as Federer cruised to a 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 victory. In his second match, he faced off against Steve Darcis of Belgium. If you're unfamiliar with the name, the Belgian famously knocked out Nadal in the opening round of Wimbledon 2013. If you thought the Mayer victory was easy, then Federer had no worries in this one; takes the match 6-1, 6-2, 6-1.

The two seed has been chilling on cruise control throughout this tournament in New York. Brad Gilbert of ESPN has even questioned at times if Federer has even broken a sweat knowing how some of these matches were. Federer has only dropped nine games only after two matches. His first match was against Leonardo Mayer of Argentina. Talking about a bit of hard luck for the Argentine as he missed out on a seed by 25 points. We take a flashback to Shanghai where Mayer had five match points on the 17-time Grand Slam champ. He failed to convert any as Federer went on to win the match and the tournament in Shanghai, the Shanghai Masters. If Mayer converts one of those, he gets seeded and avoids Federer until potentially the third round at the earliest depending on the draw.

Federer was on crash course to meet the remaining three of the Big Four members should everyone have won. However, Rafael Nadal lost to Feliciano Lopez in his second match and was upset in the late night/early morning by Fabio Fognini. He took out Andy Murray in the semifinals then would follow that up by taking out world number one Novak Djokovic in the final. The Swiss was deadly in this lone lead-up tournament as he won without dropping a set or facing a break point.

World number two Roger Federer has had a fantastic hard court summer, albeit only playing one event. The event he entered, one of his favorite events, was the Western & Southern Open. The Swiss was a well-oiled machine throughout the tournament displaying a dominant performance. In this tournament, he displayed a new tactic which at the US Open, he called SABR. The acronym stands for "Sneak Attack By Roger". The world number two's sneak attack is surprising to most as he takes a second serve as a half-volley standing about 10 feet inside the baseline. In his quite an interesting tactic, but it has worked very effectively for him.
