Coco Vandeweghe ends her 2015 season with a record under .500, but with several career highlights to carry her into 2016. The top finish for the American this season was making the quarterfinals at Wimbledon where she fell in three sets to Maria Sharapova.

Ankle First Injured At Wuhan Open

Coco Vandeweghe was riding high early at the Wuhan Open last week. After losing her first match since the U.S. Open in Tokyo last month, Vandeweghe was grinding her way through the Wuhan Open draw. The 41st ranked American won three straight three set matches over Lesia Tsurenko, Caroline Garcia and Barbara Strycova en route to the quarterfinals. She faced the sixth seed Angelique Kerber in that round. Vandeweghe was trailing 6-1, 3-1 to Kerber when she injured her left ankle and was forced to retire from the match. Coco had battled through a hand injury earlier in the week in Wuhan. She was forced into medical timeouts to treat the hand issue in both the second and third rounds.

Reinjured Against Radwanska

Despite the injury, Vandeweghe headed to Beijing this week and had a tough draw with fourth seeded Agnieszka Radwanksa waiting for her in the opening round. It was the second straight year she would meet the Polish player in Beijing. Radwanska had also beaten her in Tokyo at the Toray Pan Pacific Open the week before in straight forward fashion 6-3, 6-3. This time, Radwanska again started quickly against the American as she took control after a swap of service breaks early to take the opening set 6-3. Vandeweghe was noticeably struggling with the ankle injury and decided to retire upon completion of the first set.

The American took to Twitter late on Tuesday to announce that the injury would prevent her from competing the rest of the season.

Unfortunately my ankle is just not good enough to finish the year. It's time to rehab and get myself… https://t.co/oCsCJoBniy

Vandeweghe was ranked as high as 32nd this year. That was a career high after starting the season ranked 40th. She also turned in her best Grand Slam doubles result by making the semifinals at the U.S. Open partnered with Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany.
