The Rogers Cup takes place in August of every tennis season. However, that date which is nine months away, has not stopped anyone from planning an early commitment to it. The WTA’s top five women have all committed to the event. The Rogers Cup, a Premier 5 in terms of ranks of WTA tournaments. Premier 5s are the second highest ranked tournament after Premier Mandatories. Winners of Premier 5s earn 900 points toward their WTA ranking points.

WTA’s Top Five

The top five is led by world number one Serena Williams. The American has dominated this season winning three of four Grand Slam titles and was a couple of wins away from completing the Calendar Slam. Injury forced her out of the Asian swing and the WTA Finals.

Simona Halep follows suit as world number two. Despite finishing the season at two, the Romanian has disappointed in the Grand Slams where she was expected to make her breakthrough after her first final last year but failed to capitalize on that. She was a finalist at the Rogers Cup this year but retired in the third set against Belinda Bencic.

At a career-high, Garbiñe Muguruza is the current world number three. This year marked her first ever appearance at a Grand Slam final where she lost to Serena at Wimbledon. Her magical run in Asia, finalist in Wuhan and winner in Beijing, sent her to the WTA Finals for the first time and followed that with a semifinals appearance in Singapore in singles and was a doubles finalist.

Maria Sharapova is the world number four. She was stellar in the first half of the season making two of three Grand Slam semifinals and was a runner-up in Australia. Injuries forced her out for all of the Emirates US Open Series and the US Open itself before returning in Asia where she made the semifinals in Singapore.

Last but not least is Agnieszka Radwanska. After plenty of highs and lows for the Pole, she found herself on the highest of highs by winning the WTA Finals to finish in the top five. Radwanska is the last member of the current top five to win the Rogers Cup, winning it last year against Venus Williams.
