After being chosen as Spain's flag bearer this week, Rafael Nadal discussed the surface choice for the Olympics and his expectations for Rio. At the Olympics in Rio, Nadal is expected to play mixed doubles with fellow Spaniard Garbine Mugurza, something the defending Wimbledon finalist said she would be open to it. Unfortunately though for Nadal, the Spaniard will most likely be unable to play men's doubles with Fernando Verdasco due to their respective doubles rankings.

Nadal on the surface choice for the Olympics

When asked about his thoughts on hard courts for the Rio games, Nadal said, "It would have been more logical to play on clay. Brazil is a country where historically you play on clay, but ITF decided this and we hope to do the best we can."

Nadal and Verdasco looking unlikely to play together

Due to ranking restrictions, Nadal and Verdasco will most likely not be able to play doubles in Rio, with their respective rankings at 146 and 147. For the singles exempt, Verdasco would need to reach the top 50 after Roland Garros to be eligible, putting the Spaniards into the entry list. The men's doubles draw will have 32 teams competing for the three medals at stake.

But while Nadal might not be able to play the men's doubles with Verdasco, he would be eligible to play the mixed doubles with countrywomen Garbine Mugurza. On the possibility of playing with Muguruza, Nadal said, "Me in the mixed with Muguruza? It's a question you have to ask Conchita, she makes these decisions."

Nadal on his form going into Madrid

"It been going well all this year,"  said Nadal. "I have had good feelings since Montreal last year. Also, playing Barcelona and Madrid gives you the chance of playing two weeks at home. It's emotional because during the year there are no other occasions to do so, and I will do everything to do well in the first match."
