Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray were meeting for the 33rd time in their lustrous careers. After two hours five minutes, Djokovic claimed the Mutua Madrid Open title, winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.  

Dominant Djokovic

With Murray serving to open up proceedings, Djokovic quickly pounced and gained a break point at 15-40, though that was saved, he would break in the very next point to put his mark on the match. The Serbian consolidated to love for 2-0. The world number one continued to dominate in the opening set pushing Murray all the way with good ball striking.

In the sixth game, Djokovic hit a forehand crosscourt to break for a 5-1 lead. The Brit held his serve in the next game and forced Djokovic to serve for the set. In less than half an hour, the world number one took the opening set 6-2, wrong-footing Murray. Following this, Djokovic had won 33 sets out of the 34 against fellow members of the top ten. 

Murray fights back; levels match

Andy Murray looked calm on the court and in the second set there, were signs of a fight back. With both having held their serves, the third game showed that the 28-year-old was not going to be beaten easily, having been taken to deuce. In the following game, Djokovic was making more errors than usual and on Murray's second break and the Serb hit a double-fault which gave the Brit a 1-3 lead.

Murray consolidated to go 1-4 up in a turn of events. The next three games were held and at 3-5, Murray had the chance to claim the set. Murray hit a dropshot on set point for a 3-6 lead and it was well and truly game on in the final set. 

Djokovic battles to win set; takes title

Having held his opening service game, the world number one then broke in the following game at the first time of asking for a 2-0 lead. The Scotsman then broke immediately back and consolidated and the set was level. In the fifth game of the set, Murray's momentum was wilting and Djokovic made his move once more, breaking the defending champion with a backhand winner down the line to go 4-2 up in what turned out to be a crucial game.

A couple of games later and there was more drama. With Murray on break point at 15-40, the world number one had to dig deep and managed to take the point with an overhead smash. Murray never lied down and the break point opportunities came around once more, this time at advantage. Although he managed to save that break, the Scotsman would force another, which the Serb saved yet again. Again, Djokovic would reach championship point, his third, but this time he clinched the Madrid title for only the second time in his career. 

Match stats

Novak Djokovic hit two aces and three double-faults while Murray hit ten aces and only two double-faults. The world number one won 73 percent of first serves while Murray won 68 percent. Second serve points won would drastically fall for both players as the Serb won 52 percent, but Murray only managed to win 32 percent of the points. Djokovic was being made to work hard and it showed in the stats saving eight out of ten break points. Murray saved two from six.

On break points converted, Djokovic was more superior having converted four from six, while Murray could only break twice from ten attempts. Djokovic won 43 percent of total return points and Murray 33 percent. The 28-year-old Serb won a total of 55 percent points with the Scotsman winning 45 percent.
