Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has had an underwhelming 2016 campaign so far which has seen her fall out of the top ten and the former world number two is currently ranked at 13 in the world.

Magda Linette currently ranked at 86 in the world came through the qualifying rounds and having a match under her belt in Montreal, she will pose a difficult threat for Kvitova.

Kvitova is a former champion at the Rogers Cup winning the title back in 2012 against fellow two-time Grand Slam champion Li Na in the final.

In Montreal, Kvitova will be seeded 12th and she is always a dangerous player in every tournament she enters in and the Czech will be hoping to replicate her victory four years ago here.

Kvitova's notable results

At the Australian Open, the Czech lefty began her campaign against Luksika Kumkhum a player who upset her in the same round in 2014 but Kvitova won that match in straight sets and then suffered a disappointing second round exit to Australia's Daria Gavrilova.

Following the disappointing result in Melbourne, more misery was to follow for the Czech as she lost her two Fed Cup singles rubbers against Monica Niculescu and Simona Halep

Kvitova's woes continued during the Middle Eastern hard court swing as she lost her first match to Madison Brengle in Dubai and was ousted in the third round in Doha by Jelena Ostapenko.

At the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Kvitova's fortunes were better as the former world number two had three consecutive three-set battles in the second, third and fourth rounds respectively but her progress was halted by Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarterfinals.

The second Premier Mandatory event at the Miami Open was to follow and Kvitova was eliminated from the tournament by two-time Grand Slam semifinalist Ekaterina Makarova in the third round who is a dangerous fellow lefty on hard courts.

It was time for Kvitova to transition to her weakest surface on clay but it was at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix that she made her solitary semifinal of the year recording victories over Louisa Chirico, Niculescu and French Open champion Garbine Muguruza in the quarterfinals but fell to Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber in a high-quality semifinal encounter.

The Czech was the defending champion at the Mutua Madrid Open a tournament she enjoys as it is played at altitude and her serve works well there but after winning her first two matches she withdrew from her match against Gavrilova.

Kvitova received a bye at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome but lost to eventual finalist Madison Keys in her first match and this was followed by a third round defeat to eventual quarterfinalist Shelby Rogers at the French Open.

The two-time Wimbledon champion returned to the British lawns hoping to turn around her results but it was an underwhelming grass court campaign for Kvitova.

At the Aegon Classic in Birmingham, Kvitova defeated her compatriot Lucie Safarova in the first round but lost to Ostapenko again in the second round and this was followed by another loss to Johanna Konta in the third round of the Aegon International in Eastbourne.

At Wimbledon, Kvitova was on her quest for her third triumph at SW19 but she suffered an early exit at the hands of Makarova.

Linette's notable results

The Pole has not had a good year either and she has been ranked as high as 64 in the world but currently is languishing at 86 in the rankings.

Linette began her year at the Australian Open and she suffered a straight sets defeat to Monica Puig in the first round but she had a good run at the Miami Open by reaching the third round defeating Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the first round and one game in her second round match with former world number one Jelena Jankovic she advanced to the third round as the Serb withdrew due to injury.

The 24-year-old's tournament ended at the hands of eventual champion Victoria Azarenka.

At her hometown event in Katowice, Linette reached the quarterfinals losing to Pauline Parmentier in straight sets. The clay court season was brief for Linette as she suffered another first round defeat at a Slam and this time it was to Johanna Larsson.

Linette was winless during the grass court season as she suffered a first round defeat to Christina McHale at the Aegon Open in Nottingham followed by a first round loss to Andrea Petkovic in Birmingham and her third, first round defeat this year was at the hands of 2011 US Open champion Sam Stosur at Wimbledon.

The Pole won her first main draw match in three months since she recorded two wins in Katowice by knocking out Kristyna Pliskova in the first round of the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford before losing to the eventual finalist and two-time champion Venus Williams in three sets in the second round.

Who wins?

This will be the first encounter between Kvitova and Linette and this will be the Czech's first competitive match in a month since her disappointing second round exit at Wimbledon.

Linette received a bye in the first round of qualifiers and she recorded an impressive straight sets victory over the slumping, former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki to get into the main draw of the Rogers Cup.

Kvitova will be the heavy favourite in this encounter and you don't know what Kvitova will turn up on the day, she could either be playing lights out tennis or very bad tennis.

The Pole's favourite surfaces are clay and hard courts and she has a two-handed backhand which she could use effectively when she is returning Kvitova' serve.

The Czech's blistering returns and serve could get her out of trouble if she is struggling in this match and although she will be rusty, she should progress through the draw.

Kvitova knows that momentum is key right now as she will be playing here and representing her nation at the Olympics and the final Grand Slam of the year at the US Open is on the horizon where she reached the quarterfinals there for the first time in her career losing to the eventual champion Flavia Pennetta.

This match will take place on Central and will kick off the night session at 7 PM local time. The winner of this match will face Alize Cornet or Andrea Petkovic in a tough second round encounter.

Prediction:  Kvitova in straight sets.
