Spain's Davis Cup team are thrilled to have drawn India as they look to get back amongst the elite nations in the Davis Cup World Group. It will be a very tough draw for India but something they can relish as they will be challenging a Spanish team that will be incredibly difficult to beat, as they have a plethora of talent at their disposal.

However, 14-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal's inclusion of this tie has not been confirmed by the hosts India or Spain themselves. The tie takes places the weekend after the US Open final, which Nadal a two-time US Open champion will be hoping to be competing in.

Nadal hasn't represented Spain in Davis Cup for a year

Nadal is yet to represent Spain in the Davis Cup this year and his last appearance for his nation was last year, in Spain's flawless 5-0 drubbing of Denmark.

The Spaniard was unable to represent Spain in their Group I tie with Romania due to his wrist injury but they did not need his help to set up this tie with India.

Nadal's compatriots comprised of Roberto Bautista Agut and Feliciano Lopez helped them clinch victory in a 4-1 away tie in Cluj.

India defeated South Korea 4-1 at home to have this tough tie with Spain.

Spain's Davis Cup history with India

Spain and India are no strangers to each other as they have played each other three times in the past with the Spaniards having a 2-1 advantage over their Indian counterparts.

The two nations have not played each other in over 50 years with their last meeting taking place in 1965, and it was a tough encounter with Spain winning 3-2. The nations faced off for the first time in 1922 in Great Britain, and Spain won comfortably 4-1.

India's solitary victory over Spain was also in 1965 with the exact same scoreline, 3-2.

India has Davis Cup pedigree

India have reached the Davis Cup final on three occasions and they are one of four other nations to have never won the Davis Cup despite reaching the final more than once.

They lost to Australia in 1966, forfeited the final against South Africa in 1974 and lost to Sweden in 1987.

Their final in 1974 didn't go ahead because India refused to play against South Africa due to South Africa's government's apartheid policies.

Strong contingent

Spain have Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Roberto Bautista Agut, Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez among others they can choose from to make this a secure passage back into the World Group.

The fans in India would love to see Nadal compete in India as it is would be a rare appearance for the former world number one to be playing competitive tennis in India.
