Laura Siegemund and Mate Pavic captured the mixed doubles title with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the Americans Coco Vandeweghe and recent silver medalist Rajeev Ram. Coming into the final, neither team have had to face a seeded team.

Siegmund/Pavic grab late break to gain advantage and win the opening set

The match started comfortably for both pairs. After four games, each player had held their own service games and looked settled. From then on in, it seemed to have been the Americans who were troubling their opponents more. The closest they got to breaking Siegemund and Pavic was in the second and sixth game as both times a deciding point was required, before the German-Croatian pairing fought their way to restoring parity. The ninth game proved crucial for the German and Croatian. At 30-all, they manage to win the point to set up a break point opportunity.

Despite going on to save the break point with an ace, Ram and Vandeweghe were broken when an exchange at the net between Siegemund and Vandeweghe was won by the 28-year-old, who forced her opponent to play that one extra shot which ended up flashing beyond the baseline. Pavic, who was serving for the set, managed to rush to a 40-love lead, however, they got tight and the American pair came back at them winning three points in a row to set up a deciding point. However, the crucial point went to Pavic and Siegemund who went a set to the good, 6-4.

With the momentum on their side, Siegemund and Pavic started the second set in tremendous fashion. They took their opponents to a deciding point before ultimately winning and breaking. However, they failed to consolidate as the American pair came straight back at them. A double fault gifted a break point opportunity and despite having saved one, the Americans broke immediately back for 1-1. For the first time in this set, Vandeweghe held his serve to love to go 1-2 up. They were then followed by a hold to love from Siegemund. Another two holds of serve came and went as the set moved to 3-3.

The seventh game was the most crucial of the match. A break point opportunity came around for Siegemund and Pavic but Vandeweghe and Ram managed to save the point and send the game to a deciding point but lost serve when Pavic won the point to go 4-3 up. A hold of serve from the 28-year-old Siegemund put her and Pavic one game away. The Americans held serve and put Pavic and Siegemund under pressure. A dropshot from Siegemund brought up a double-match point and even though they had one match point saved, Siegemund won the vital point and clinched the set, 6-4, and the title.
