The second episode of the Lucha Underground pro wrestling series premiered last night on the El Rey Network. The first episode left a little to be desired. If future episodes of the show continue to move like the second episode then we should be all in on this revolutionary concept for a wrestling program.

The night started with a tag team performance to finalize the ending of the last episode. Prince Puma teamed up with Johnny Mundo to exact revenge against Cortez Castro and Ciso. Next was an outstanding mixed wrestling match that featured Chavo Guerrero and Sexy Star facing off against Son of Havoc and Ivelisse. The main event of the evening featured the return of Blue Demon, who faced off against the sinister newcomer Mil Muertes and his tantalizing manager Catrina. All three matches where truly outstanding and finally set the tone of what we were expecting from Lucha Underground all along.

During the broadcast Matt Striker and Vampiro called out any fighters in the Los Angeles area to try their hand and Lucha Underground. From MMA fighters to grapplers, they said they want them all. In essence that is what can allow this organization to stand out. Recruiting potential stars from around the world and developing their own talent in the Lucha Libre mold. Anyone watching this show would be hard pressed not to have been blown away by both tag teams battles. The combatants showed a phenomenal display of showmanship and athleticism, which is exactly why we are watching this promotion.

The central figure from the show Darlo Cueto was almost non-existent this episode which allowed for more in ring action. The constant promos they run bring a desire for the show to have just to continue. The original promo package for Prince Puma was a nice addition to the first episode but it was not as welcomed the second time around. We love the build up around the character and the infusion of Konan is priceless, but enough is enough! We know Puma is from the hood, we know he is from a legacy of warriors, and we know he is badass. There really is no promo needed for Puma because his wrestling speaks volumes for what he can accomplish.

The ladies were well represented this time out as we got to see the graceful, and high flying Sexy Star, the aggressive but also equally skilled Ivelisse and Catrina who we could not take our eyes off for the entire show. The ladies all played their roles extremely well and as Striker said these women could take the spotlight from the men. Where is Lita when you need her? The WWE better start paying attention to the girls outside of Total Divas as they could lose some of their Hispanic female talent to this organization. It would be great to see a talent like Layla El get away from being underused and find a niche in a promotion like this.

The icing on the cake for the second episode was the final match between Blue Demon and Mil Muertes. While it was not the most aesthetically pleasing match, it did show the power and skill of Muertes and of course Catrina. What stole the show was the ending of the match that saw Chavo comes to the aid of Demon only to turn on him and crack him with a steel chair. This prompted more Luchas to appear and gave us a quick glimpse of some of the other athletes on their roster. They soon felt Chavo’s wrath. No one was exempt, including his teammate from earlier Sexy Star. This writer can’t recall the last time we saw a man crack a woman on the head with a chair but leave it up to Chavo to be that guy. For those unfamiliar with his career he had a good run as a heel in the WCW promotion. Until they went the crazy route with Chavo it really worked for him. Fans should be happy to see him back in this light and with such a veteran at the helm it could do wonders for Lucha Underground.

As previously mentioned there is a place for Lucha Underground in the world of sports entertainment. With this being on the El Rey Network, the show is destine to develop at least a cult following. How the show looked upon right now to the rest of the world does not really matter as long as inside that dirty temple the action and storylines improve each week. In a world filled with cereal box characters or just plain weirdoes it’s nice to get back to just watching the athletes perform and that’s one thing they surely did in episode two.
